I am a 44yo/S/W/F. Moving to the RGV from Baltimore for federal job.
Where should I look to live?
And, yes, I have to take this job in that area...

If you want small town atmosphere: Harlingen
Big city feel with traffic: McAllen

Another factor to consider (in addition to the excellent point made above): Harlingen is closer to the beach.

I'm relocating to the Harlingen area as well next month for work. What places should we avoid? Specific neighborhoods/zip codes, etc. would be helpful

I'd definitely avoid most of the small towns west of La Feria, ( Mercedes, Weslaco, Donna, Alamo, San Juan and Pharr) as those towns tend to have a higher crime rate per captia..... I'd choose Harlingen depending on which city your job is in.... McAllen is fine as well tbh.
