great recommendations. Scott & White is a renowned Level I Trauma Center in Temple, and Temple is surrounded by VERY country towns.
my favorite is Gatesville..there is a very small (but great) hospital in town but you can live in Gatesville and commute to Scott & White. or you can work for the US Army like i do (i will NEVER go back to working in the civilian world again..no way...too spoiled...and all the RN's i work with feel the same way..us govt workers got it good!)
one of my coworkers lives in Gatesville and another lives in Moody. Moody is REAL country. Gatesville is great cuz it's got a TSC and a great western store, super walmart, HEB, lots of livestock shows/rodeos etc, and i like the fact that it is a working class town thanks to the 5 prisons. i cant say enough about it-i love it and cant wait to buy a house there (right now i live 15-20 minutes south of Gatesville)
oh and Crawford is just north of Gatesville, you can be Pres Bush's neighbor!

Closer to larger towns are McGregor, Moody and Oglesby. There are 2 very good hospitals in Waco. Then theres always the Temple-Belton area which have small towns of Academy, Holland to name few smaller towns.

And an area of Texas with very few tornadoes. You have to like the desert though to live there.

Julie,
My husband works at SW Texas Methodist Hospital (which I personally think is great), but there are tons of hospitals around that area... . ( University Hosp, St Lukes Baptist, VA) etc... . Those are some of the bigger ones. Also, closer to us, there are SEVERAL others such as Lackland AFB- Wilford Hall, Downtown Baptist etc.
We live on the outskirts of San Antonio, (small country town- Somerset). However, it is close enough to San Antonio, for fun things to do. I guess I am a bit opposite of you, which is why we just reduced the price on our property...). I am trying to get my son to go into nursing, because around here the work is plentiful and you can pretty much choose what is most important to you.

Good Luck in your search!

You could move to Jarrell and still be an easy commute from a LOT of hospitals (and more opening up as we speak). Population about 1200 (but growing), 20 minutes from Georgetown (population 25,000), 40 minutes from Austin, 30 minutes from Temple. Weir or Granger are also possibilities in the area.

I'm with Belle on the Scott and White system. I've heard great things about it and considered it myself (18 years ICU). I presently live about 8 miles outside a town of 2400 in East Texas and commute 50 miles/minutes to Beaumont (Christus Health St Elizabeth) a Level II center. But my wife drives 45 minutes to our west to a smaller hospital in Livingston (pop. 5,000) (she's a naturalized Cannuck) where she works relief in their small ICU). We are 90 minutes from Houston here

From what I've heard you may want to avoid the Valley areas for your professional work atmosphere! Other than that ... pick the type of land you want, the atmosphere, the size of hospital ... and ... c'mon down! Welcome!

Try any place north of the Dallas area and near the Red River. Some nice towns can be found there. Cities are not too far away and you get just enough of what you're looking for.

Stephenville in North Central TX (10,000 pop) has Harris Methodist Hospital with many quiet small towns within 10-20 miles away with country settings not prone to the really severe weather/tornados/flooding of North TX, Dallas, East TX, Austin, Houston, San Antonio. Towns surrounding Stephenville are Dublin, DeLeon, Hico, Glen Rose, Tolar, Bluffdale, Morgan Mill, Gorman.Moderator cut: advertising

Wink How about Anna, Texas

My husband and I moved to Anna 4 years ago from Dallas. When deciding to move I based my decision on the result of finding something that was similar to the area country living where my grandparents lived in Doucette/Woodville, Tx a place that is for farmers and ranchers. Well the best we found was Anna not too far from our jobs which are in the city of Plano but far enough not to have unwanted drop ins by friends.
I am posting the website for Anna. It has growed a lot but there is still a lot of untouch land. Surrounding smaller towns are Melissa, Van Alstyne Bonham all these towns and Anna are about 50 miles or so from Oklahoma. We do get tornadoes and snow because we are in the North. But moving to Texas you will realize early that Texas weather can change quickly from 72 degrees one day to snow the next......GOOD LUCK WWW.ANNATEXAS.GOV
