It did get rather exciting at about 0300 on Thursday (10 April) here in Ft Worth. A squall line blew through, moving at 59 mph, and there were three tornadoes in the area, not counting the three in Breckenridge about 90 miles west. Some people in Hurst-Euless-Bedford between Ft Worth and Dallas still don't have their power back on, although mine stayed on with only a few flickers. Lots of trees were heavily damaged.
I'm more concerned about hail than tornadoes; it's much more likely statistically to get ya. I had softball-sized hail in '95 and had to get a new roof. It goes with the territory.

Prior to moving to Abilene, I think I experienced a hail storm three times in my life. LOL, I think we had hail three times in my first six months in Abilene! I think it's pretty cool! But that's because nothing I own has been hail-damaged!

It's amazing that, in some years, you don't get any significant hail damage or much hail at all, and in years like this one, you see houses that now need repair because of wind gusts and hail. It's incredible. And where I live, it's not very often that you get hail up to baseball-sized (the Fort Worth incident at Mayfest a number of years ago comes to mind).

April 10 is a well-remembered date here in Wichita Falls!

If you're out there, just wait. And just be sure you have an awning or garage handy when you actually own something with the potential to get hail damage.

case44: The Mayfest hailstorm in 1995 was when the softball-sized hail landed on my property! It only lasted for about one minute, but when it's that big, that's all it takes.
TexasReb: I remember riding my motorcycle up 287 the year after the Wichita Fallas tornado, and I was stunned at the damage along the highway that still existed. Shells of apartment buildings with the innards exposed, etc. It looked it it had been bombed. That was a terrible event.

My parents were also Dallas born and raised and one of them "saw" the one in 1957 but no one effected from it. They are not as "common" in the immediate Dallas area as believed by some from outside the area. Most of the time the torndados in the DFW area are to the west out towards Tarrant County and surrounding areas THAT way.
The weather forecasters have gotten a lot more advanced and believe me if there is the SLIGHTEST threat that one could, might, have a chance, see one, develop, clouds swirl, whatever they are on the tv telling you. They will interupt all regular broadcasting to warn you of the possible threat that conditions are "right" but no sight of one. What we do have more of is high winds and damage from straight line winds. For many years before technology was as advanced many people thought they had damage from a tornado and no one ever saw it. Turns out most of the time it was from the straight line winds or high winds and no tornado ever formed.

Come to Hale County, Texas (Plainview). We are number 2 for the greatest number of tornadoes since 1950. Oddly, Harris County (Houston) is number 1. See chart here.
