Default Amarillo VA Hospital

I am considering moving to Amarillo and would like to know about the VA hospital there. Does anyone have any experiences they would like to share about their care there?

The buildings are old and have serious mold and asbestos problems. They are replacing some of the wings but it's going slow (it's the government, after all). They rotate the nursing staff from one wing to another so they won't be continuously exposed to the mold problems. There is a new administrator just took over recently and they have hopes that she will improve the situation. Many of the patient services such as surgeries, treatments, etc. are done by doctors in private practice in Amarillo.....that's a good situation. Amarillo is a large medical center for a huge geographic area and has some outstanding doctors.

Seriously, we moved from Amarillo, TX last year. We are in WA state now. We also work in the medical field. VA Hospital a plum place for RNs to work in Amarillo. It may have problems but the problems noted are also at BSA and Northwest Hospital - the two better known hospitals in town. I worked at both, I know. Nursing staff rotates constantly through both hospitals. Docs usually agreed that quality is good at the VA Hospital as anywhere else in town.

I'll second that!!
If you want to register with the VA hospital do it before you come to Amarillo.
They wouldn't except my DD-214 as legitimate. Basically told me I was a fraud not a veteran at all. Just a civilian looking for free health care.
All you really need is your DD-214 but they play God up there and register who they want and give the finger to the rest. They can kiss my...!!!
