I hear Western Texas is largely empty. I'm a black atheist so I don't wanna go somewhere where being social largely involves church.

the only major metro in West Texas is El Paso. Its heavily hispanic though.I dont think you would like Midland,Odessa,Abilene,San Angelo,Lubbock based on your criteria. Why West Texas?

If your an atheist Im not sure West Texas is the best place. If you want to try one of the larger cities in Texas like Austin, Dallas, or Houston, you can find plenty of black atheists.

I heard it might be easier to find a special education job there and it's cheaper

Special education is needed everywhere.
Yes, rent is lower, but your salary there will also be lower, too. Costs for food, gas, and utilities are abut the same everywhere. So, it all evens out.
You need to move where you will be happy.

First, let's clarify your definition of "Western" Texas. We Texans refer to it as "West Texas," and have been arguing since 1860 over just where it starts. People in El Paso will tell you it ain't "West Texas," until you cross the Peco River which pretty much leaves you only El Paso. Others put the line somewhere west of I-35 which could include the cities of San Angelo, Midland Odessa, and up in the Panhandle, Amarillo and Lubbock.

I wouldn't focus on your Atheism, there are plenty of people who believe in God but don't use religion as the centerpoint of their lives. Rather, focus on your career and your hobbies and research from there.

Good luck to you!
