That's a pretty darned accurate map. I grew up in the small county of Hughes County Oklahoma and out of all the coke and soda counties, Hughes County (80%) referred to it as "Pop." We always called it pop growing up. Great map, thanks..

Here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, I've never said I'd like a coke and want something else. Whenever a waiter or waitress asks me what I want to drink I tell them. Dr. Pepper, Iced Tea, or water.

It's interesting though. Next time they ask me what I want to drink I'll say "coke," and see how they respond.

That's pretty much been my experience too.

However some parts, specifically that Great Lakes region and all of Canada refer to it as pop. My co-workers in Houston mentioned that in Texas when eating out people order a "coke" and then the normal response is, "what kind, Dr. Pepper, Sprite, Pepsi, etc...?"

I was very perplexed and mentioned to them that this made absolutely no sense whatsoever since Coke is a specific cola flavored carbonated beverage. That would be like going to Dairy Queen and ordering a chocolate cone and as they're about to prepare it tell them that you want vanilla. While they are both indeed types if ice cream they are very different and distinct in flavor. Same with coke and other brands/flavors. All, of my Texan co-workers paused for a minute, digesting my point and nodded in unison, getting my point immediately.

So anyway, just curious as to why and how this came about as it is factually incorrect. Thanks
Generally, people in the south don't care for Pepsi. When I go to a restaurant and order a coke, the waitress will sometimes ask "is pepsi okay?", and I'll say "I guess that'll do". If I want Sprite I will just say that from the beginning. Nobody in the south calls it "pop".

Of course Big Red's, orange sodas, grape sodas, etc. sold good too. But, I will never forget her laughing and telling us the biggest selling soft drink was the RC, except when most of her customers asked for it, they also wanted a peanut patty to go with it and this is how they mainly asked for it...."Gimme one of those RoC's and a peanut rounder".

I had forgotten about RC's. Do they still make them? I've drank my share of them, although to me, they were sweeter than Cokes and I liked Coke better. I hadn't thought about Moon Pies in a long time, but actually saw some at the store a while back.

They'll bring you coke, and that's how it's suppose to be. However, if you come over to my house and I ask you if you want a coke, feel free to say sure, what you got?

Seriously, I've never heard of anyone giving a waiter or waitress an order for anything other than what they want, i.e., Coke, Dr. Pepper, milk, water, etc. It's as specific as ordering a steak. You can't just say I'll have steak. LOL, how are they going to know if you want the ribeye, the T-bone, the fillet or what, maybe even the chicken fried.

Yes, I can remember my grampa always talking about drinking a RC and eating a Moon Pie with it. Another southern tradition is to empty a pack of salty peanuts into a bottled Coke, and then eat them while swishing the Coke in your mouth. Real Coke is also sometimes called "Cocola".

always a "coke" for me...
tanks (as in stock tanks) and icebox's are routine words in my vocabulary.

i noticed one thing, not sure if it's been mentioned here, but when i am done with a meal, i ask for the "ticket"...i have noticed that in other regions of the US, you ask for the "check"

"throwed off" is another word that i use that turns heads outside of TX...meaning "crazy" or "just ain't right in the head" etc..

I have never labeled all sodas by coke! Don't know anyone who has. Not in San Antonio!

I always say soda!
