The only things I dislike about Lumberton is that everyone has known each other for many years and although they are nice they dont seem to like letting new people in their "clicks". If you move to a bigger neighborhood it might be easier for you to find friends. I think I made a mistake moving to a smaller neighborhood with mainly older (retired or almost retired) folks. The kids have adjusted really well though and love the schools. I also made a mistake in not getting really involved with the school right away and it is hard to learn their ways of doing things. It is like a different world compared to where I came from.
somebody mentioned their being a lot of prejudice here. I have noticed a little but not a ton. there are a couple of black kids in the intermediate school and my daughter said they are treated just like everyone else and have plenty of friends.

I remember you posting about your upcoming move. I wondered how things went and where you finally settled in. Glad you're finding things OK!

Beaumont is my kinda town
When I was in high school in the early 70's, I couldn't wait to cross the river and see the world. For 4 years I traveled and saw some great places but got homesick and moved back to the high humidity, king sized skeeters, swampy bottoms areas and the greatest folks on the planet. I work in Beaumont, sleep in Lumberton and play in southeast Texas. It ain't perfect but it's home.

Sassy, if you are looking for that in SETX, try Bridge City, Orangefield, Vidor. Little Cypress-Mauriceville. Just a bit larger from 12-20000, you have Lumberton, Nederland, Port Neches-Groves, Hamshire Fannett. All are easily accesible to Sabine Lake and the beach.

sassymo - I'd recommend Lumberton, Nederland and anywhere in the Mid-County area (in that order).
Depending on where you'll be working, Beaumont's West-End might be an option. Just say "NO" to Port Aurthur.
Good luck.

I was born in Port Arthur and grew up in Orange. Left when I was 20 and you couldn't make me go back. I tolerate it a few times per year to visit my family but that's about it. It has to be one of the most backwards and xenophobic places I know of.

I grew up in mid-county and left in my early 20s, have lived in Colorado and California, but now live in Austin. I go back regularly to the area now to see family and friends. I don't know what parts of the area you visit, but it certainly isn't backwards or xenophobic.
