Meth labs aren't that bad in Corpus. I know most of the cops in the city and I can tell you they are not dirty. Dude stop saying bs. Its stupid. I dont know about the state troopers or county police, but CCPD is not a dirty department. And Rockport is 45 minutes from Corpus. Maybe the cops are dirty there, but that doesn't mean cops are dirty in Corpus.

Since I have been back in South Texas for two weeks, I have made four trips to Corpus. Even though I was born in Corpus and spent the first five or six years of my life there, I have no strings to attatch me to her or defend her, aside from my own personal judgements.

Here is what I have concluded about Corpus:

Corpus is Corpus. She is basically the same city that I knew as a kid. She is basically the same city that I have known through the years when I would visit each time I had come back home from backwoods-Yankee land. Change is not a priority of Corpus. While most people will despise her for this, I embrace her for it. This single fact keeps Corpus from turning into a bloated metropolis which she is definately not ready for.

Police presence is not overly-active in Corpus. At least when you compare Corpus to other Texas cities. I doubt anyone will try to defend this fact, even Gabe. This is not a problem in the day time, but in certain areas at night it could be an issue. I hold a different line of thought on the subject which would venture off onto a seperate topic and I will not discuss that here or now. However, if you are entrusting your life to someone else to defend it, then I recommend you pick your neighborhood very carefully.

Corpus is a weathered Gulf Coast city. Some buildings weather nicely, some do not. There are good parts to it, along with bad parts, and in some areas the two reside next door to each other. Some people take pride in their yards, some do not. Once again, if you are considering moving to her, and you are bothered by this, pick your neighborhood wisely.

Corpus is not a city that typically caters to the ultra-high class snob. Okay, she has Shoreline drive, Hewit, and possibly Del-Mar. These are the exceptions, and when compared to the similar areas of other cities in Texas, these are bargin bin properties. Corpus is more of a lower income to upper-middle class city. This is probably one of the reasons why I love her as much as I do. It isn't all a Beverly Hills-esque pipe dream that you see on some television show. It is a down to earth, realistic city available to anyone willing to work hard for their dreams.

Corpus shopping is adequate for a city of her size. Once again, I will stress that this is not an ideal place for someone looking for high class shopping. For all the average person's needs, however, Corpus will suit one just fine. The downside to Corpus in terms of commerce is that she is really missing a perfect opportunity in dining. She has the ideal location for a spectacular Mexican/Tex-Mex restraurant, a phenominal seafood restraurant, and superb steakhouse. Sadly, she only ranks as adequate in all three catagories.

Corpus moves at a slower pace. Most people looking to live in a city want a faster pace of life, for this, I emplore them to pick San Antonio, Austin, DFW, or Houston. Corpus will turn you off. However, if one likes their city living with a little bit of small town sprinkle in terms of pace, then it is pretty hard to beat Corpus.

Now, while these might all seem like negatives, I will state that having been to all the major and minor cities in the state of Texas, my favorite is still Corpus. And, as I have mentioned before, Corpus in particular, and South Texas in general, is not an area for everyone.

Would I personally live in Corpus? No, I would not. It is not because of the city that I would not, it is just a fact that I prefer to be inland, rural, and secluded. If I had to live in any Texas city, Corpus would be my choice, though.

Corpus, like most major cities here, can cater to just about anyones tastes and preferences.

Gotta ask yourself what you're looking for in an urban environment, and where best matches up with that suiting.

So what are the areas to avoid in order to avoid crime or poorly maintained properties?

As I have stated in another post, drive around corpus and look at individual neighborhoods and you will find what you like and what neighborhood just feels right for you. Its easy to see questionable neighborhoods and comfortable neighborhoods. What one person feels is a good or great area and what another person thinks is a good or great neighborhood can be very different. There are neighborhoods with primarily professionals, blue collar, white collar, retirees and neighborhoods with a mix of everyone. House prices can also vary considerably. There are numerous new developments and several older neighborhoods. I also recommend with gas prices what they are and will be for the future, you consider convenience to schools, shopping, your job and public transportation.

Agree with Change of Pace.....just depends on what you like. I wouldn't live anywhere except on the Island. Why? It's not that I don't think other parts of CC are fine, it's just that I could live in one of the Southside neighborhoods or Calallan or Portland communities anywhere in the country. The best part of living in Corpus (to me) is the proximity to water. Other people I know would never live on the Island and haven't visited a beach in years or don't think the price difference is worth it. Really, it all comes down to personal preference.

Gabetx..you are obviously one of the people that love the area so much you can't admit what goes on....just because you KNOW police and they seem so sweet and nice means NOTHING...I met a sheriff once...and thought he was awsome...no..I am not mentioning his name or what city he was in...we got to know each other very well...and then I found out what really went on...SOUTH TEXAS in general is BAD...very BAD...and if you don't think so then you are just blind....I have lived in this area for 20 years...and have had friends and relatives in law enforcement and have knowm a few judges..and I mean in this ENTIRE area...I find people here are very ignorant and don't want to admit what really happens...period...which is why I finally left this God forsaken area....

oh..and if you are wonder what the crime index of corpus christi is...national average is 4479.3 and corpus is 7275.3....higher means worse...corpus actually has more crime the new york city per 100,000 people...crap..their rape rate is 5 times higher then new york!...that is a fact..check the stats...

well..interestingly enough, when i lived in south texas for one year in 07, just 30 minutes from Corpus Christi, it was the ONLY time in my life i ever had any problems with a corrupt police dept. i was stalked by a hispanic cop to the point where i had to actually file charges, have meetings and depositions with the detectives, and i must say, they were the most unprofessional corrupt sleazy people i have ever dealt with. by the way, so yall dont think i invited myself to be a victim to this, other nurses i worked with were victims too.
i firsthand witnessed the corruption of ICE (immigration and customs enforcement) and USBP (United States Border Patrol) agents,steal money from my patients (illegals)...for instance, they would come in injured from a rollover which occured when their driver/coyote was in a high speed chase, and they would be ejected from the vehicle, and when i had to tear off their clothes with trauma shears, i would find thousands of dollars hidden in secret compartments built into their underwear, britches, what have you...and then later on, after i stabilized my trauma patient, and they were able to communicate, they would ask where their valuables were. all the money would be gone...and it was so easy, for those agents to steal their money, cuz illegals have no leg to stand on...and it sure wasnt us nurses stealing their money......so i KNOW who it was.........
i was disgusted by so much that i saw down there, it was a total nightmare, i felt like i was working in a third world country full of lawlessness.........

i am from washington and we ( two families) are considering hard moving to texas, corpus christi.we think its beautiful there. we are sick of the weather here all it does is rain, rain and more rain! also low wages,and few oppertunities here in lewis county. we want palm trees warm weather and a beach that doesnt turn you blue and low cost real estate! we want a new start with a good town, with good people to boot. does anyone have nieghborhood pics to share? thanks for all the input on brownsville and corpus we were looking at both but corpus rules over bv for us.
