My family is moving to Lubbock this summer, and it seems like a good place to live, but I still have a few questions:
1. I have two teenagers and I was wondering which high school is the best in town?
2. What kind of activities are there for them to do when they are not in school?
3. I've heard the saying "High school football is king", but what other sports do the high schools there play?

Smile Welcome

Basically, you'd want to stay anywhere from northwest to southwest along and outside Loop 289. And stay west of I-27. As far as the school district, I knew someone who used to teach at Monterey and their music program was awfully good. Now, that was years ago, so I'm not sure about now. I've had friends who've lived in Lubbock, and I believe the two schools most frequently mentioned were Coronado and Monterey. From what I've read about Lubbock ISD's attendance area, some of the city's western neighborhoods are either in Frenship's (town of Wolfforth) school district or Shallowater's. I don't think you'll go wrong.

By the way, check this out. Lubbock Fun Club - Live it up!

1. Monterey and Coronado are great schools, but my choice has to go to Lubbock High. Monterey tends to focus on their athletic programs, and Coronado regularly scores the highest on the TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills), but Lubbock High has one of the best magnet programs in the state. Lubbock High is a unique mix of lower middle class kids and magnet students. It is the only school in Lubbock to have the International Baccalaureate Program. In 2002, Lubbock High had the most students graduating with an IB diploma than any other school in North America. That same year, it also placed 3rd in the National Academic Decathlon. It is one of the few schools in Texas to have an extra long day Mon. through Thurs. and have a half day on Fri. It is also a Blue Ribbon School.
2. Lubbock is not the most exciting city for teenagers, but I was never very bored growing up. It has a decent mall and it just got a Main Event. Major bands come through town occasionally (like Paramore and Jimmy Eat World), and Buffalo Springs Lake is fun in the summer. But for the most part, sports are what teenagers do.
3. In Lubbock, football is the most popular sport, but baseball and basketball are a close second. Tennis has a relatively large following, and there are many soccer clubs around town. All schools have baseball, basketball, football, tennis, and swimming. In addition, Lubbock High has gymnastics and karate.

Very good post, my friend. My last time in Lubbock, there were bulldozers in a lot of places. South, southwest, west, and northwest are the places to be now, but look out for Overton Park and downtown, too, in the years to come.

If the city grows, then Lubbock is sure to get more things, AFL. I've been crowing about the city's growth, and it's no joke. And it doesn't hurt to have Texas Tech there, either. If Coach Bob Knight endorses that community (and he really does), then they're doing something right.

Rumor has it that they're going to put a new mini mall in McDougalville (Local name for North Overton development area)

Thanks for all of your comments. That really cleared up all my questions about the school system. After some more research after your comments, I've found that the schools in Lubbock are great for my kids.

Oh one more question: The Internet can only tell me so much, what is the weather like?

You'll have 300 days of sunshine a year, and a tad bit of dust every now and then. Oh, they get rain, but the area is semi-arid. Cool nights in the spring and fall. Hot summers, but not much different from the rest of the state.
