Do people call Galveston area "Bay Area" as well? I have a friend in Texas in the Houston area and he called Galveston the Bay Area and I was confused af maybe that's what they call it there. I have been to Galveston once so I don't know.

Typically they refer to the Clear Lake area as the Bay Area, and possibly Pasadena and Baytown and some others. Some of the cities in the Clear Lake area are in Galveston County. But generally it excludes the city of Galveston or the island.

Exactly. I live in the Bay Area, but I'm still 30 minutes from Galveston on the mainland (though in Galveston County). I generally consider all of Clear Lake, League City, Seabrook, Kemah, Clear Lake Shores, San Leon and Texas City as the Bay area. Funny, I never really thought much about the industrial areas like Pasadena, La Porte and Baytown etc as being in that category, but I suppose they are.

The Island of Galveston itself is its own category, IMO anyway.

Most likely the locals have been using this term since long before the SF area was called the Bay area throughout the country.

Lived in Houston for 25 years, never heard that area called the "bay area" in the local news, or anyone I knew. I think this, if it is happening now, is a new "thing" by new comers, lol or millennials or is now, pc, which I am not.

I guess I should point out, of course Galveston Bay was referred to very often. The bay city of ..... Or the town Bay City of course. Or on "the bay" blah, blah, blah, not someone lives "in THE Bay Area" that was never a defined area. You may here have heard now so many thousand people may live in the Galveston Bay Area, or the cities in the Galveston Bay area...

Could be. I grew up in Houston and don't think I ever heard it called "Bay Area" until I moved down here last year after 15 years away from Houston. It seems very prevalent in print, especially.

When I was a kid, I just called this entire quadrant of the metro Pasadena (if it was industrial) or Clear Lake (residential). All points south were "on the way to Galveston".

lived here 37 years never heard the houston area called "the bay area". long term houston area residents dont use that term ever. its galveston, houston, seabrook, kemah, baycliff, texas city, clearlake, and such. Now technically clearlake is houston but its always been clearlake to the locals. I have seen the "bay area" term in the last few years and usually hear it from transplants.

galveston bay is just that no one refers to the houston area as "the bay area" ever.

we do have trinity bay in the same area.

people from california.........

I grew up in La Porte and I have heard that. I think partly it comes from names of streets and the fact many of the small towns along the water are indeed on a bay. i.e. Bay Area Blvd, Bayshore drive, Bay Ave... Some of the realtors around use the term as well.

I think it would not include Galveston, as I would consider that more coastal vs the bay, but that is an assumption.
