Waco might be worth a gander, as well - good medical facilities, too.

Waco may be too hot for the OP since it gets humid there.the average summer high is about 97 degrees there.

The increasing number of people coming here from other states has put pressure on housing stock. Lower income housing units are in short supply in many communities and there are often waiting lists. Abilene is a nice city, as is San Angelo. We visit both cities often. Of the two, we prefer San Angelo. The Concho river flowing through the city surrounded by a riverwalk and parks creates an oasis of cool in an otherwise dry and dusty landscape. There's a nice art museum, good medical care, and lots of volunteer opportunities. It's hot though, like most of Texas.

Keep in mind as you do your research that Texas is huge. It's over 800 miles north-south and east-west. The distance from El Paso to Brownsville is about the same as from St.Louis to Charleston, SC. From Amarillo to the Rio Grande Valley is about the same distance as from Charleston to Detroit. It's 4 hours from Llano to Humble.

Most cities aren't very walkable. Getting almost anywhere requires a car. From the perspective of aging in place, population density will probably help dictate the availability of public transportation options when driving becomes difficult, and medical support systems availability in the event of failing health. Not pleasant things to think about but necessary when moving to an area without a friends and family support network.
