Default Visiting Denton, need advice or pics : )

I applied to UNT and got accepted. Im planning a solo trip down there over March 16-21. Was wondering what I should see. I see alot of mixed reviews about the city but most negative ones are coming from the same people. I originally got into UTA but that didnt work and I now have too many credits to transfer there. I heard Denton had a good music scene also (top priority) and that it had less "yuppies". No offense to anyone. I was looking for a reasonably priced, laid back, hippie vibe kind of town with friendly people. How is UNT's business program (I know its not as good as UTA but I think I may like the city more)? Are the people friendly? Hows life for a 21 year old single girl (lol)? If anyone has has reccommendations of what i should see that would be great. If anyone has pics of Denton that would be great too!

You'll like Denton. It's got a great scene for UNT life as well as great food and shopping. And there will be plenty of new shopping to come in about a year (Rayzor Ranch). I don't think you'll have any problem looking for what you want here. There is a lot of construction and road work in different parts of the city, so do be careful. It's not far from other parts of the Metroplex. By the way, since it is close to Dallas, this would probably be better on the Dallas threads. You'll get more responses there.

Hope you'll enjoy it!

It might be their spring break that week. It is for most of the school districts in the Dallas area and sometimes the colleges around here are the same week. If it is spring break then Denton will be a "lil dead" as the college kids will not be there so it won't be a true reflection of "life in Denton" as a "college student". I went to TWU and UNT while dh went to UTA so I know both pretty well (we dated then). If a couple can be living that far apart thru college and still "survive" it ain't that bad . When I WAS living IN Denton it was not uncommon for us girls to decide to hit the clubs all the way in Dallas. Not a problem at all. This was back in the early & mid-80's so Denton was MUCH smaller then. Even then there were a few clubs in Denton to hit which we usually did for weeknight "ladies night" specials. UNT is a big school and it does have a good amount of commuter students from the Dallas area but not NEAR the "commuter" school that UTA is AT ALL!!! Since Denton is more of a "college town" than Arlington you will find more people your own age living around you. UNT also has a lot of different clubs to get involved in depending on your interests.

If you like music then check out the One O'Clock Lab Band at UNT. They have been WELL KNOWN for DECADES!!! GREAT jazz band.

Yes UNT has spring vacation 17-23. Consider changing your schedule of when to visit if you can. Where you coming from if i may ask.

Yes Denton is the only spot in the metroplex that has a strong core group of folks that depart and try and avoid the yuppie culture. It has a very laid back vibe to it.
If you like music... Denton is the spot to be in for the north texas area.

Venues to look into while you are in town...
Strawberry Fields, Haileys, Rubber Gloves, The Boiler Room, Andys Bar, J&Js old dirty basement,

House Venues (Denton house the lock down on house DIY venues):
House of Tinnitus, Wisconson House, Fra House, Panhandle House, Extreme Dudes Manor, Slutbanger (changed its name recently).

Denton is fun place if you are into things that are counter culture. The people are great and the DIY culture is in full effect... something that is rare for texas.

Places to eat:
Oriental Garden, Chopstix, El Guapos, La Mexicana, Abby Inn Restaraunt, Sweatwater bar n grill, The Greenhouse, Andaman Thai... lots of other places too.

Do visit the Recycled Bookstoore on the place they call "The Square". Look up the "The Square" in Denton... thats becoming a popular Tourist spot in Denton.

Denton Texas on MTV news....

Im coming from New Mexico. Im actually visiting during my spring spreak so i cant really change the schedule. It should be okay though. I know the place will be quieter than usual but I figure thats a better time to check out the campus. I will definately check out the recommendations. Thanks a bunch!!
