Houston is by far more liberaLAs stated just look at the city councils and compare.Housto has a large diverse city with a large asian, black; hispanic and even middle east cultures. It also has alot of mixed professionals in the suburbs because of the huge medical complex there. Then there is the oil industry that brings in prople from all over the world.

I didn't know that you could say "Dallas" "Houston" and "Liberal" in the same sentence without having a strong sense of irony.

Default Is Houston or Dallas more a "Bible Belt" type city??

Are the cities equal in terms of evangelical populations?

Dallas is smack down in the middle but it has become an oasis...the whole county...
Houston is on the border...so they're about the same...

@ Texdav
Houston does not out pace Dallas in Liberalness... Even if it did it wouldn't be by a huge margin like you describe. Dallas and Houston are conservative for big cities but are very liberal compared to...Montana...or the countryside.
You speak of Dallas as if it were all white, Dallas and Houston are more alike then different.
They have similar demographics, structure, and attitudes.
Dallas has a huge Black and Black population. while the Asian population isn't as high as Houston...Houston only is about 5% Asian...that is not huge... Dallas is like 3.5-5% Asian so even then some... Diversity doesn't dictate political boundaries...Seattle for example is quite liberal but is primarily white.

I think the real question is - which city is most moderate? As a Houstonian, I'd say they're about equal. And this is a great thing because you can easily find your group no matter who you are!

Houston is split pretty evenly 50/50. The 'liberals' slaving to pay the landlords' apartments in gentrified areas does not capture the attitude of the 2.1 million people in the city limits.

Interesting thread.
It all depends on the definition of the term "lberal".

If by liberal u mean non extreme right winger,no religious fanatical,pro-abortion,tolerance of homosexuals & a "kindler, gentler, open minded " attitude ,then that version of liberalism is widely accepted & I hope the majority of Houstonians endorse it.

But if we talk about leftist ideas,anti-gun,pro criminal, socialist euro -type ideas on economic issues, enviroloonies, "Go O.J,go "/Jesse Jackson/ Farrakhan black racists & antisemites,I hope that the people with such mentality r very few, anywhere ,around 10-15%

I guess 60% of Obama voters & 20 % of Hillary voters r leftists, the rest r just liberals or centrists...

Yes. I am referring to people who are very open minded and accepting of all types of people. Can the same be said for Dallas?

Make no mistake, this is part of many liberals' viewpoints.

Touting diversity and tolerance, but tolerating only certain groups/sects/subcultures, excluding white/caucasian/european Christians in the definition of diversity, and crying "racist" to anyone who wants to debate/discuss these issues.

Anti-guns, anti military & enviro-loonies is self explanatory.

''Euro-economics'' -- the unmentioned effect of people wanting things for free. Socialism/nanny-government in this area seems to be the way the entire country is headed, though I doubt we will ever be as extreme as many countries in Europe.

This is all part of liberalism. The line of thinking is going to be the same anywhere in the country, but I don't think it's nearly as common here in Texas as it is in say, the west coast areas of San Francisco and Berkeley.

Libertarian ideas are what people here may consider 'liberal.' This is more the moderate norm you'll find in Texas. Thank goodness.

There certainly r no boundaries between liberalism & leftism.

We...have to create such a barrier to prevent contamination of liberals from leftist antiamerican ideas.

Some liberal ideas r right...

Libertarians r supposed to be anti-gov etc. I guess your Ron Paul classifies as such

On the tax issue,I would say...God bless.

Today, even the Dems,at least the centrists/blue dog /DLC talk against rasing taxes.

Even the "progressives" leftists r not screaming for ( more ) tax blood anymore,at least on paper...

On the economy issues,Americanism prevails..

But u see what happens with black racism,85% of black Dems ( 90% of blacks ) for Obama.

Or preaching "black & brown " coalition...

If Hillary got 80s & 85s from the whites,they would scream "racism ""& " white conspiracy "...

Both cities are about the same in terms of which city is liberal. Honestly, neither is as liberal as Boston or San Francisco or as conservative as Oklahoma City or Salt Lake City. I would say they are moderate leaning slightly towards the left. Again, we are talking about city limits.
