"Denton is like Austin 20 years ago"
I have heard people say this and I have seen statements similar to it on this board. But what does this mean? I am considering both UT-Austin and North Texas for graduate school in public administration but I think North Texas is the greater likelihood of the two since the LBJ School at Austin seems more geared towards policy than administration, not to mention more difficult to get into. So I've been to Austin but only recently and I loved it. Will Denton be just as good?

Hopefully you get a lot of answers. I got accepted to both schools but am leaning toward UNT. I was hoping to get comparisons as well but a lot of my threads went unnoticed : (

I think what it means is that Austin has grown so much that it doesn't have the same college town, laid back feel as it used to. There is some truth to that. But there are certain things about Austin that are the same, the Hill Country, lots of live music, lakes, liberalness.. 'cept now there is a bunch more traffic and buildings.
Denton probably still maintains a college town feel, although it is close enough to Dallas that you may not feel so isolated, if you are used to a bigger city.
The UT Austin degree might carry a bit more weight, but if UNT is better for your focus, I'd see no reason not to go there.

so basically Denton is the hip Texas college town Austin was before its rapid growth...not that Austin is no longer a cool place to live, but I guess with growth comes change, some good some bad.

I have a very hard time picturing Denton as Austin - it's just never struck me as weird enough! (Great music, though.)

But isn't Denton by definition Greater Metroplex? So isn't it in "rapid growth" mode as well?
& Geograpically (hill country), Musically (wildly diverse...& when i think of "Austin" music, i'm not thinkin' Jazz), Politically (lots of nutty politicians in town & it's often referred to as "the Peoples Republic of Austin", Austin is way different & has a far different "quality of life" than Denton.
So no....Denton isn't "the hip Texas college town that Austin was" (or is).

Yeah, I'd probably agree with that for the most part. You can't really be the little hip TX college town secret when everyone knows about you. So that mantle has probably been passed from Austin to another town... maybe it's Denton?
But I'd also agree that it doesn't necessarily make Denton like Austin in any way -- the two are different vibes, Denton has it's own thing going for it, and perhaps fits in the hip college town category more than Austin does now. Austin is more like the hip mid-size metro for all the relocating California people and Texas people with money.

Denton is a mixed bag of extremely liberal people, moderates, and conservative Christian people. The folks you will see around UNT are artists, hippies, gays, fraternity and soriety types. You will also see huge amounts of asians, indians, and people from the middle east. If that sounds HIP to you - then I guess it is. IMO it isn't very hip or cool. UNT totally cramped my style.
Austin is more laid back and easy going. More outdoorsy. Not near as artsy or bizarre as Denton. Austin has more to do obviously.
