Hello single 40 yr old A.A straight male from D.C. Looking to relocate from D.C. in either Dallas or Houston for a change of pace / fresh start I run my own business online so I'm able to relocate with ease. Just thinking Texas as a whole would be a great place to restart and my choices is dallas/Houston I'm looking for a area that's least expensive, but not heavy crime as well. I prefer the city life although I'm not opposed to something outside of city just don't want to have to drive a hour for some entertainment I enjoy working out 4-5 times a week so gym is a must I'm not a big party goer however I do enjoy getting out sometimes and because I'm single attractive male I would love to find a area where singles such as myself frequent. I'm trying to keep my rental expenses under 1000 so a studio apartment/one bedroom suits me just fine that may limit my choices but starting out that will do just fine. Any suggestions between the two cities? Thanks

Houston is going to be a little cheaper. While you can still find studios in Dallas under 1000, you will be hardpressed to find them in "The City Life"

You really should fly down and check them out, flights from DC to Dallas arn't that bad. Do at least a weekend in each before deciding. Both cities are totally different from DC.

I echo that as well. Dallas & Houston are more laid out like Atlanta than DC, meaning they are not nearly as dense, urban, or walkable. Dallas is a little better for "urban life" than Houston, but compared to DC they're more similar than different.

Rent prices are nice in Houston right now. If you can find something around the Memorial Park area, you would be close to lots of things.

A lot of my friends about your age, many single or married but with no kids, live further west and hang out in Katy.

You could also try Pearland, nice suburban life not far from Houston with easier access down to the beaches.

From what you want out of a city, you can find it in either place. No wrong answer there.

Right now, Houston is noticeably cheaper than Dallas. That said the economy is more diverse in Dallas and healthier at the current moment so the opportunities may be better there for what you want. Houston had a slump with the oil industry and the cost of oil, but it seems to be on the rebound and it may be a good time to look at coming here.

Ive lived in both cities. Both great cities to live in. You cant go wrong.

I think you would be happy in either the Dallas/Fort Worth/Arlington Metroplex or Houston.I agree with Cowboys fan that there is no wrong answer.I like both metros.

I second that. Pearland is definitely worth looking into.

Weather wise Dallas has snow and ice, more of the four seasons type of thing you're used to. Houston has perpetual summer. No snow. A few freezes a year if that. This is A/C type weather, barbecue, and gardening weather.

Not even close. A few snow or ice events per year doesn't qualify as four seasons. I'm from the northeast and Dallas has maybe 2 or 3 seasons tops. Winter here is like fall in DC.

True. But Dallas has more of a seasonal change than Houston does. There is a difference in weather trends.
