I guess you have the big 5.

Dallas
Houston
San Antonio
Fort Worth
Austin

Out of these cities which was more dangerous at their peaks( im guessing this would be in the 80s or 90s)
Of those five, it would have been neck and neck between Dallas and Fort Worth as far as the murder rate is concerned. The earliest year whose Uniform Crime Report figures the FBI still shows on its data base is 1995, and in that year Houston had a murder rate per 100,000 of 18.2, Dallas 26.2, Fort Worth 23.4, San Antonio 14.2 and Austin 8.8. Corpus, San Antonio, El Paso, Lubbock, Odessa and the Texas border cities never came close to having the highest murder rates.

Well, most of those northern snowbirds probably can't see well enough to shoot each other anyway. So count your blessings.

It is debatable. Dallas in the 90s had a higher crime rate than Houston.

Oil hands drinking who knew!

Reminds me of the time I saw an east coast news program doing a story on the most common pairings of professions by marriage. Doctor/Nurse Lawyer/Admin Teacher/Teacher Oil Worker/Dancer. They seemed perplexed by the last one and openly wondered if there was a lot of ballet out west they didn't know about. I of course burst out laughing.

Historically, Houston was most dangerous because it was the murder capital for some of the 80s, by recording 701 murders in '81. The 90's were rough as well because Houston had a Northside vs. Southside rivalry that started from the city's growing hip-hop scene. People from both sides of town died behind that war. There's conflicting stories as to how the Northside/Southside beef started.

Are these comparing metropolitan areas or cities? Comparing cities is tricky, as cities that are hemmed in by suburbs like Dallas are going to be more densely populated and urban that cities that expand into suburban areas and still annex rural developments. The crime rate may be much higher too.

When I lived in El Paso in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the huge crime problem seemed to be auto theft, as someone could hotwire a car and have it in a Juarez chop shop before you'd notice your driveway was empty. That seems to have abated. But property crime is an issue even if the violent crime rate is very low.

Couldn't have said it any better. Houston was once the murder capital of America. Dallas can't claim that.
