Default Dominicans and Puerto Ricans in Texas

Obviously, the major of hispanic folks in Texas are Mexicans .... but are there enough of other hispanics (namely Dominicans, Puerto Ricans and/or Cubans) that people won't see a hispanic person and assume hispanic = mexican?

It's not that important, but curious about the non-Mexican hispanics in Texas (particularly the major cities like Austin, SA, Houston, etc.).

Also, which of the major cities (and neighboring areas) have the most and least tension ethnic tension and us-vs-them mentality when it comes to Anglos "versus" Hispanics/Mexicans?

As long as you are a legal citizen/immigrant...I (and I assume many others) don't care...I like learning about other cultures...many illegal immigrants come from Mexico...many of those are from central american countries...however the gateway is through mexico...so...yes, I have a problem with mexico and their illegal aliens coming into america...ruining out healthcare system, getting government handouts (yes, they do work hard...but employers hire them because they can pay them so little), leaving the places they live trashy, etc...my beef is with illegals...I think there are many great aspects of latin culture...I think Puerto Rico is pretty cool...and you are already an american (if the OP is in fact puerto rican)...cuba is cool too...(cubans know their jazz)...I don't think there is necessarily an us vs. them attitude...many of us (texans and americans) don't want illegals in our country (the majority of whom are from mexico)...if you respect our flag and culture...your ethnicity...skin color doesn't matter to the vast majority of us...and I'm sorry about the rant (anytime mexico comes up...I do that)

Most of the hispanic immigrants do come through Mexico, although many are actually from other places in Central and South America.

While there is a Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominic population, it's not going to be as large as it is in other places. I don't believe most people will automatically lump you in with "Mexicans" in a negative way. Texas has a strong Mexican/Texican influence so it's not unusual to see hispanics around. Although the immigration debate is pretty heated here. But it is more around "illegal" vs "legal" and most people don't just assume hispanic people are illegal. That would be ridiculous as there are plenty of hispanic folks whose families have been here since Texas was it's own country.

Doubt it. Most people will assume speaking Spanish or having a Native American look automatically = Mexican simply because they dominate in Texas, and other varities of Hispanic aren't very prominent.

My sister and I have ancestry from all over W and S Europe. She definitely got the stronger Mediterranean genes than I did, and has a greater ability to tan. But her bf's father made a comment behind closed doors, "oh great, another beaner in the family." So evidently if you're a tan Greek or Italian, you may be mistaken for Mexican as well. HAHAHA. He can't be the only one saying these stupid things, either.

But whatever the case, I'm not really sure what the big deal is. Good chance is you find a native Texan whose roots run deep for generations in the southern part this state, there will be Mexican-Texan-Americans in their extended families. I can simply look at my and the in-laws' cousins.

Quoted for great justice. If you want to come here legally, work hard and earn your keep, and get a better life for your family, then color or language is a non issue to me.

Lot's of PR's here. I see more in San Antonio due to the Salsa scene. You guys have lots of pride for your race and you'll fit fine w/ all hispanics here in the major cities. Just slow down on your spanish and you might be mistaken for a Mexican

I think Houston has the largest of all three out of all the major cities in the state.
