Seems like every rap song from Texas since the 1990's has fit in a reference or two to "lean," "sizzurp," "purple stuff," or "drank." How big of a cultural influence does this drink have in Texas, and how much popularity does it maintain as a party drink of choice, particularly with younger people?

Drank is any drink for one. Purple stuff and sizzurp is kool-aid, and I never heard of lean before. It's all Southern dialogue.

Well, those terms all refer to a drink made by mixing promethazine and codeine cough syrup with soda and a hard candy such as a Jolly Rancher.
A study from the University of Texas a couple years back said that 9% of Texas high schoolers had used the drink in the past school year, which is quite a lot when you think about it. I was wondering if the drink is still as popular today in Texas as it was back in 2004 or so. It has spread nationwide, but Texas is the "spiritual homeland," as it were, of "Purple Drank." |

I am probably your closest bet you will find on here. I listen to everything from traditional Chinese folk songs, to the blues, to Johnny Cash. The two major genres I listen to are Brutal Death Metal (Viral Load makes me proud to be a Texan!) and rap. The Geto Boys are a favorite.
However, I can not help you one bit with your question regarding what they are. As far as cultural impact, I would wager that outside of the Fifth Ward, it has had about as much impact as the responses you have gotten here. That would be absolutely none. Edit - Well, I guess you answered your own question then. Last edited by GoingHome2TX; 04-04-2008 at 07:57 PM. Reason: Added response while typing my own post |
