We drove from Dallas to Austin on the Friday before Labor Day 2018. Left Dallas about 11 and got to Austin at 3 with one stop for lunch along the way. At no point were we ever driving 20mph...

I left when I got off work - 5pm- 5:30. I guess that was the problem. It was awful. Google said my arrival time in Corpus would have been 2:30am. When I saw that and we were not even to Buccee's yet, I called my dad and said we weren't coming and told the hubby to make a u-turn and go home.

One of the things I love about driving in Texas is that you can get OFF the interstate, find a state road going same direction you are headed and still go 70 mph.
We used to go from Paris to Zapata (stopping at various lakes to fish) and never get ON the interstates pulling our bass boats.
Of course you go through towns but that's just an opportunity to get BBQ or kolaches depending on time of day.

Of course it took forever. You chose the worst time to leave.

One has to leave when one doesn't have to be at work and won't get fired

I would have either taken a nap when I got home and then left after rush hour or gone to bed early and left very early Saturday morning.

Next time take 67 in the direction of Clevurne to 220 to Hico & then take 281-S to 290-E & see if you feel the need to turn around.

I've done this drive before. Much more scenic too.

I made a trip up 35 to Nebraska on Christmas day, and returned on New Year's day. Obviously lighter than normal traffic conditions, but the flow seemed to be steady right around the speed limits both directions. Maybe due to the light traffic and no 'herd' mentality to justify driving 85 or 90.

I highly recommend a trip through Austin at about 8:00am on Christmas morning if you wanna see just how long it should take to get through it. I didn't touch the brakes until we stopped to tinkle in Georgetown.
