Haby's Alsatian Bakery in Castroville. They have great kolaches, donuts, and bread.
Czech Stop in West. Delicious sandwiches!!
And for pie, even though it's not a "bakery" The Bluebonnet Cafe in Marble Falls can't be beat. I don't even like pie, but they have a peanut butter pie that is out of this world!

In Dallas I LOVE LOVE LOVE Cindy's restaurant and Bakery on Central and Royal (they're a chain, but that one has the biggest bakery of the ones I've been to). I grew up in the North East, and this is as good as any deli from back there. And it's the only place I've found in the area where you can get a good poppy seed hammentashen year round. Their bagels are the best too.

I know the one you're talking about. We always stop on the way back from the sale at West and we stop at it first. They have a pineapple kolache with cream cheese icing that has little bits of pineapple mingled in it that is out of this world. I'm not that crazy about pineapple, but I love this. Our next stop is at the Chech Stop where we get our favorites there. We've been to the Smokehouse, but it is hard to catch them open. The one time we did, the selection was very poor, guess we should have been there earlier but maybe next time!
I tried several recipes for kolaches and then hit on one that is great. It is easy to do and they are as good as the ones at West. This is one of my daughter's favorite things to eat for breakfast. She can just get a couple out the the freezer and pop them in the micowave. Sausage and cream cheese is her favorite. All I can say is it's a good thing I don't live to close to West, I probably wouldn't be able to get through the front door!

Has anyone ever had the Red Hot Apple Kolaches? You can't find them in any of the stores but most of the native Czech's here make them. One good reason someone in the family married a Czech I just have to remember to send a pan w/ them when they go for it to be filled up for me
Anyway, they are the regular Apple Kolaches but they put Red Hot's (the little cinnamon candys) IN w/ the apple filling and then bake them. YUM!!!! It turns kind of pinkish but they are WELL WORTH FIGHTING OVER!!! I'll knock the kids down and out of the way for those babies

Y'all are killing me -- but it is almost lunch time.
Society Bakery shares space with Corner Market and Florist -- Elijah Woods was in there the other day - on Lower Greenville just south of the Granada.
Dallas Affaires Cake Company Lakewood Shopping Center cakes and petit-fours
Two Sisters Catering has a variety of selections for you to take home! on Gaston (by Baylor) and on Monticello (by HP/M-Streets)
Bread Winners Bakery on McKinney in Uptown next to uber cool Primo's Tex-Mex Patio - Breadwinners is a great place for Sunday brunch and to reminisce about the former Andrew's in that space.
La Duni Restaurant Knox-Henderson -- can you say Quatro Leches?

The Smokehouse does keep odd hours and is only open until noon on Sundays. Someone else mentioned their selection wasn't too big but I think they keep most of theirs in the kitchen and not in the case. Also, I think they only bake a certain amount for each day and sell out. Czech Stop bakes all day.
The place next to Czech Stop, formerly Kaska's, isn't run by the same people anymore and doesn't bake many kolaches anymore. The Kaska's had moved into town and had taken over an old restaurant building across from the railroad tracks but I'm not sure that's even open anymore.
I hear that the Village Bakery on the main street is open again (I think it closed for a while?) and is really good.

Every pie they have at the Bluebonnet is out of this world!
Another great place for pie which is not a bakery per se is the Coney Island Cafe in Pampa. They make fresh pies every morning and sell them by the slice or by the pie. The custard pie is the best custard pie I have ever eaten.

A Sugar-Free Bakery? Now It's Possible
Another one worth checking out is one I haven't been to in years, but it is a more multi-faceted specialty place. The name of the place is Sugarless Delite. It's in Richardson near the Telecom area, but they do include a bakery with many delicious goodies. They also make candies, different toppings, and even salad dressings. Here's the caveat, though: The place specializes in products that are sugar-free, low carb, low cal, and cater well to nutritional needs or for those seriously watching their weight. It's the most unique place I've ever seen. I was introduced to that place courtesy of a delivery I made to that location while working for a Northeast Dallas courier. From what I recall, I remember sampling a few brownies there during a run. It's the durndest thing.
Here's the link to it (you'll be amazed):

Bakery
Upper Crust Bakery in Austin for those amazing cinnamon rolls. They've ruined me for any other cinnamon roll.

In East Texas you might like The Butcher Shop in Longview. They have a bakery as well and their cakes are wonderful. They have pies, cookies and pastries too. Have one of their great hamburgers while you are there.

The Bluebonnet in Marble Falls has wonderful cinnamon rolls.
Collin Street in Corsicana makes great coconut macaroons, and their apricot-pecan fruitcake is amazing.
Gainesville has the Fried Pie Company Restaurant on the square - the best fried pies ever! Do they count?
