Bakeries in Texas
Hi, once again! I'm back with a new thread after mulling things over (like what to write next ). I've got bakeries on my mind. You already know that Texas is known for its many bakeries and all that they make. We all know the giant corporations (Mrs. Baird's) and the places we travel a ways to that are also well-known (Collin Street in Corsicana). There are so many across our state that specialize in different things ranging from pies to cookies to cakes and even different breads. Some might be known for donuts. Sure, there are chains out there, but there are some fine "one-shot" places that you sometimes see in Texas Monthly.
So here's the plan and here is where I want this critter to go: I want us to share what your favorite bakery is in our state and what you like about it. If you have more than one that you like, feel free to share that, also. It has to be located in Texas. Some places have a specific specialty, and if that's what you like, then you can let us know.
The computer campfire is burning brightly once again -- it just needs another log. Let's come gather around it now and we'll find out what great stuff we can come up with right here. What bakery in this great state do you like?? By the way, you can even make a recommendation if it's a place we've never been to. Think about that!
Also, I'll even include a poll to gauge what you folks most frequently get when you're visiting a bakery.
For now, let 'er rip! I'll be back.

When we are in the area it's Czech Stop in West......YUMMY!
Growing up in Dallas we always went to Steins I think at Preston and Royal? It's been a long time...don't know if they are even in business anymore.
I also like Celebrity in Frisco.....
Now that we live in the Tyler area....the only thing I know is Brookshires.

You may want to drive around a little bit in Tyler. Surely, they must have a good local place that you'd think people would know.

Case's Faves
I have a few faves. In Glen Rose, they have a very nice town square, and right next to it is a place called Pie Peddlers. It is definitely the quintessential small-town bakery. I took home a blackberry pie once. My all-time favorite is one I mentioned in my opener, and that's Collin Street in Corsicana. It's legendary for the invention of the fruitcake, but that isn't why I go there. They've got the best pecan pie I've ever had, and the texture of it is different from anything else. I've also been known to grab a few cookies there, too.

I like Naegelin's in New Braunfels. A friend of mine always used to go there and get Struedel and send it to her mom in Idaho since her mom said it was the best she'd ever had There's another one next to the main Central Market in Austin that my husband loves for their Kolaches, but don't remember the name of it.

Here in Abilene, we have McKay's bakery downtown and Snowhite bakery in a few locations. Yum!!!!!
I only buy pies, though, on occasion. I make my own bread, cakes, cookies, even kolache. My grandmother came from Czechoslovakia so my mom knew how to make Slovak foods and pastries and she taught me! LOL, I remember how amazed she was when I told her there was a little Czech town in rural Texas!
