Default Texas Dance Halls

Ok, y'all...got a new one to start. That at LEAST, I bet, those of us over 35 might can contribute...

That is, what is your best memory and/or songs of true Texas Dance Halls? Those huge "barn" type buildings where a waxed wooden floor dominated the layout and the tables ringed it? They served beer and "setups" (BYOB) and the band played fiddles and steel guitar type stuff! Jutting from some "windows" were "swamp coolers" . When the band took a break, the juke box started playing...and it was REAL country music.

Patsy Cline, George Jones, Dixie Lee, and Bob Wills were no strangers to this place...

And the Cotton-eyed Joe!

Ahhhhh...memories of Texas back when Texas was Texas...and we all knew it....

Gruen Hall in Near New Braunfells, awesome place, hotter then you know where in the summer but a true experience.

Of course Billy Bobs in the Fort Worth Stockyards is awesome as well, not many places like that with a bull riding ring in the middle.

The Broken Spoke--Austin, TX ("we ain't fancy, but we're damn sure country")

I love it when James White sings the Broken Spoke anthem on stage while a "wheel roller" rolls the wooden wheel around the dance floor!

Now, I'm a yankee, but don't hold that against me! I'm a Texan in heart and spirit! And I'll try not to step on your toes! (I'm just learning how to 2-step!)

Never thought otherwise, ma'am...

Lets see if I can remember here...(so stay with me, cos this Texan has two left feet sometime....)

Pairs around the room, (glaring at the others to get up and join in) progressing counter-clockwise.

I stand on inside, you on the outside...holding your right hand with my right hand..on your right shoulder and left on left...

NOW then, ready?

Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys Cotton Eyed Joe - Song - MP3 Stream on IMEEM Music

Cross left foot, then right..kick out left, then polka steps left-right-left....

YEEEEEEEEEEEHAWWWWWWWWWWWWW

Right foot cross...kicks out and repeat....

After it is over...*whew..aint had this much fun in 20 years. Escorts you lightly to the table...I sure did enjoy it, ma'am! I think I will go get us a co'beer! Anybody else want one?
