Default looking at relocating to Athens TX

Hello my husband and I are looking at relocating to Athens. We currently live in WY. I would like to know are the schools any good? Is athens a decent to good place to raise a family? What is the weather like? We are tired of the snow and the wind. If you or your spouse were offered a chance to relocate to Athens would you? What kind of shopping is around the area? Is Athens part of a flood plain? Is there alot of crime or drugs? Is there any type of activities for a family to do? My husband lived in Austin when he was a child and said he always wanted to move back to Texas. Now that we have a family the two of us and four children. He was offered a job and really wants to accept it. But neither one of us knows the area that well so he is hesitant as am I. Also I am a Licensed pratical nurse does anyone know the contact info to transfer my license? Is there any were for me to gain employment? I know RNs are more perfered so i figured i would ask. Thank you for your time Jo.

Hi! This caught my eye, since we also considered Athens. We are life-time Texans who did a few years out of state. Coming back, we looked at Athens. Beautiful area, etc., with great real estate prices. I visited the high school personally (this was 2004), and spoke with someone in the counselors office. I was wanting to pick up curriculum info, elective courses, etc. Well, this lady told me I'd probably be happier sending my kids to a neighboring district. I am not making this up!! I also got the same vibe from the chamber of commerce. Again, not making this up. I would visit the school personally & get a feel for the current situation. We ended up in Parker County, west of Ft. Worth. Good luck in your quest!

Good luck with Athens. I haven't been there in years, but a friend's brother used to be Sheriff there and I remember him saying they have a bad methamphetamine problem...

Athens is only an hour drive to the DFW metroplex area. We made the move from DFW northern suburbs to E Texas (north of Tyler) 8 months ago. It's a slower pace of life but it has paid off a million times over. I read something on Cnn.com a while back that talked about Athens area being considered by many people for relocation due to closeness to the DFW area, low real estate prices, economics. The best thing is to just investigate it through this web-site and others. Good Luck!

Hi there,

My husband and I lived in Athens when we were fresh out of college from 1992-1994. It is a cute little town with everything you need in the way of necessities. The apartment we lived in was within walking distance to a nice park with a good walking trail. As far as schools go, I'm sure they are about par with most East Texas schools. The great thing about Athens is that it is an easy hour and a half drive from Dallas if you want to take your kids to museums, theme parks, etc. We moved to the DFW metroplex in order to move forward with our careers, but honestly, now that we've lived in the city for 14 years and have a family of our own, we'd move back in a heartbeat. I'm doubting the town has changed very much since we left; it seems like smaller East Texas towns tend to stay the same. (Athens residents---please correct me if I'm wrong!)

BTW---Athens has a nice medical center; we were friends with a few Canadian nurses when we lived there, and they loved their nursing jobs in Athens.

Best wishes on your move, and if you do indeed decide to relocate to Texas, welcome!

Thumbs up NY-TX ZipLine Adventures

Water's Edge Ranch is a beautiful place. While I was there, I found out about another neat place close to Athens.

New York, Texas ZipLine Adventures is located about 20 minutes from Water's Edge Ranch.

They have wonderful views and a great zipline course. Some of the prettiest scenery in this area.

check it out: GoZipTexas.com
