Default Homeschooling groups in Mount Pleasant area?

Hi,

I'm moving to Mount Pleasant next month. Both my husband and I work from home and plan to homeschool our children. I'd love to find a nice, inclusive homeschooling group.

I don't mind a group that is Christian-based (we are respectful of all religions), but we aren't affiliated with any religion ourselves. So, if the group is based around a religion, I would hope that we aren't treated like heathens.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

The only group that I know of in Mt. Pleasant is at Chempa. This is a chiristian group but you can check out the website and email Lisa from the contacts page if you have any questions.

I would not worry too much about the "Christian" name stuff. In general it tends to be a marketing term. Actual competence and non-crazy is more important in this domain.

But do keep in mind to look in to it all.

Our little girl is overly smart and tends to take things very literally. She came out of some church group thing screaming and crying -- "They killed God and are doing something with the blood." Sounds sort of funny in retrospect, but I must admit I was beyond POed at the time, and she was bothered for days.

We have pretty much given up on East Texas because the value placed on the education system is so dismal. (but what about that football!?!?! Freakin gomers.)

So what is appealing about Mt. Pleasant to you?

Yes, the football obsession in schools is definitely a state-wide thing and not relegated to East Texas. We know nothing about sports and won't be dealing with the school system, though, so it doesn't really affect us.

As for Mt. Pleasant, we just happened to find a house online we liked a lot and, when we visited, found it to be a beautiful area. The crime is low and everyone I have met there so far is terribly nice.

We live in the Dallas area and want to get away from a) crime and b) wall-to-wall traffic. Oh, and the crime. And the crime.

After living in the city and realizing that my children can't safely walk out the front door, I will welcome "Gomers" any day!

Oh yeah. I understand all too well. On the South side of Dallas, law enforcement is so absent that just-shoot-em has become the norm, and since you know the cops will not show for even "shots fired," the only question is do we have to turn in the body?

But East Texas is not absent crime, either. So be cautious and aware. Mrs. Phil's step father is a town cop out that way. Easy and laid back. Has two rules -- 1. don't make me run, and 2. If you are pulled over, stop in the shade. If you stop in the shade you only get a warning. Make him stand in the Sun, and you are going to get a ticket.

But truly Meth is taking its toll our that way, and they just had a big furneal today for a cop that got killed by a bad guy.

I would push harder for us to head that way, but the schools being so bad (even elementary schools now being scored "academically unacceptable.") it means the future is bleak.

Amy, I notice that this post by you is over a year old so I don't know if you check this forum any more. But I wanted to ask have you found any homeschool groups that are what you were looking for? We are Christians but had hoped to find an inclusive group nearby and haven't. Anyway, please feel free to message me back, I don't live too far from Mt. Pleasant.
