After initial issues with the CDC test, a spokesperson said that Texas’s state public health labs had the ability to test as of this week. A lab in Austin, for example, has run two tests and is capable of running 52 tests a day.

“If someone has COVID-19 symptoms and travel[s] to an area where it’s spreading or other possible exposures, they should see a doctor,” and the doctor will consult with officials about whether a test is warranted, according to Chris Van Deusen, a spokesperson for the Texas Department of State Health Services. “It’s not always black and white, but with limited capacity, we need to prioritize testing for people who really need it and that helps us learn more about the situation in Texas.” ...

(No word about how many Texans has been already tested)

Gov. Greg Abbott announced that six public health labs in Texas could now test for COVID-19 statewide, one of which is in Houston. The others are in Austin, El Paso, Dallas, Lubbock and Fort Worth.
Four more labs will be fully equipped in the coming days.

Here in Tyler, we should have testing capabilities up and running shortly as well, at UT Health Science Center. Tyler is one of the other four testing sites.

A man in Collin County tested positive for the new coronavirus — the first case caught thought to be caught domestically in Texas and not related to a group of Houston-area travelers who took cruises to Egypt in February.

The Collin County case is the 24th confirmed case of COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus, in the state.

It was not in Texas. Based on the incubation period, he likely contracted it in CA or in travel.

So how many times can you get tested? I mean what if I needed testing, and was cleared. Later I return to work and then I need to fly to the West Coast for work or perhaps a family emergency. Then maybe I feel ill. Will I be able to get tested again? I would hope they don't impose some type of ridiculous cap on this.

And about seeing a doctor - the symptoms initially sound like a whole lot of other illnesses. So if I make an appointment will they be able to discern from a phone call that I should not be seated in a cramped waiting room while I wait for the Dr?

Anyway, I know this is serious, but I am more afraid about the panic this has created than the virus itself. I do understand part of that panic comes from the amazing ability it has to spread so fast. But at the same time a lot of affected people will only experience mild or moderate symptoms unless they have underlying health conditions beforehand.

The panic is totally unwarranted for the vast majority of the population. There are definitely people who are vulnerable and they need to take precautions, but as you said, health children and non-elderly adults will either be asymptomatic or have moderate symptoms at worst. One of the theories I have read as to the rapid transmission of the virus is that there are a lot of people who have such mild symptoms they don't even realize they have it.

The biggest issue with covid-19 is the constant 24/7 media fearmongering.

I am not afraid per say of the virus, BUT I don't want to dismiss it as "Just like the flu".

This snipped from Joe Rogan podcast with infection control expert seem to have the best explanation. He says threat is very serious but does not scare monger like others.

This.

I only pay attention to the WHO and their statistics. Literally nothing else matters when I look for information on Coronavirus. The statistics show that the virus has a strong foothold in Western Europe and is getting one in the northern half of the US.

The one country right now where the hype is probably worth it is Italy. They, by far, have the highest number of new cases.

Looking at countries where large numbers of new cases are coming out, there is a very clear correlation between warm/humid weather and decline of spread but its largely being ignored.

I was watching this yesterday. Really good information. People might scoff at it because he’s on Joe Rogan show but he’s the real deal. No mainstream media sensationalism either. Just straight forward information. Basically take this seriously but no need to panic nor dismiss it.

I needed toilet paper because I was just about to run out last night. Went to Walmart to pick some up as well as a few items for hot dogs an I was amazed to see how empty the shelves were of toilet paper, which I thought was just a meme.

So I just came here to say this:

PEOPLE ARE IDIOTS.
