I doing research on some cities in TX and wondered if anyone has any personal knowledge about living in Bay City or the surrounding area.

We lived in Victoria several years ago and have considered relocating there again but was curious about other smaller places. We like to fish and hubby is a trap shooter so he needs to be fairly close to a trap club like he had in Victoria. I know there is a club in Bay City. I'm a quilter and I know there is a quilt guild there and some quilt stores near by.

We don't need much in the way of amenities. We're seniors (hubby just turned 80 and I'm 74) but we're very healthy and fairly active. I'm also wondering about doctors and dentists, etc. We have very poor healthcare professionals in our area in AZ and as we get older, we'd like to be more secure.

What about crime? I did a Google and it's looks like crime is pretty high there. Is that accurate?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have personal information about Bay City. However, this document lists all of the trauma centers and their levels in Michigan:

https://www.michigan.gov/documents/m...I%204%2F3%2F22

For retirement, I would want to be near a level 1 or 2 trauma center. Having to travel for medical care is inconvenient, but in an emergency I don't want to have to travel a long way.

Good luck!

A level 1 trauma center is important if you get into a serious car accident or are shot. For just about everything else, including the health needs of senior citizens, a 2 or even a 3 will be fine.

Level 3 trauma centers may not have surgeons available 24/7:

Personally, I would want a level 1 or 2, but that's just me.

Bay City is not a "bad" place per se, but it has some challenges. You may have a very hard time finding a house to your liking - there has been little new supply built there in the last few decades. There have been a couple subdivisions of new homes but generally there's very few of those homes available for sale. Owners of older homes needing a bunch of work have gotten away with excessive pricing given the age and condition.

The town has a reputation, deserved or not, for being low-income and low-achievement. Not a small number of professionals who work in the area choose to live in the Richmond-Rosenberg or Lake Jackson areas.

That said, the town does have a super Walmart, a movie theater (pre-COVID), and a couple decent restaurants. The coast obviously isn't far away.

Pretty sure they are talking about Bay City, TX not Bay City, MI.

If you are into fishing, 24 miles away from Bay City, and also 24 miles from Lake Jackson is Sargent, Texas. No medical facilities there at all.......but crazy good fishing, small town friendliness, coastal vibe, lots of retirees.
