Huntington, TX-Not So Friendly anymore
I have been a long time resident of Huntington, Tx. My children started school there and we all made some great friends. We recently moved due to job issues, being there were none. At least good paying ones to support a family of five. We began the process of selling our property a few months ago. We figured it would be simple. Huntington was a 'Mayberry' type community. Well we were so wrong. Hunting has been telling people that are interested in moving to the city that they are not allowed to put mobile homes in the city any longer. I am here to say that not only do I think this is ridiculous, it's driving away much needed tax revenue from the city. The police department is shorthanded and the crime rate is going up ( I know this cause I have been a victim on more than one occasion). They can't afford to keep their beloved centennial park mowed. They have run down buildings all over the place. But no one can put a well made mobile home anywhere. I had a mobile home on the property that I am trying to sell and unless I am the one who puts another on it, then it's not ok. Why? Shouldn't it be the land that is grandfathered? Not only that but I was recently informed that the ordinance has not even passed yet. They are enforcing a law that doesnt even exist. I believe that they are violating our rights and it's time we did something about it.

There must be a war against mobile homes going on in Angelina County? The State of Texas, sued my home owner's association making my mobile home and lot in the County worthless. Lest you you think I am exagerating, I now live in New Mexico and have tried unsuccessfully to give my Lufkin property away. Since the County refuses to lower their tax appraisal, my plan now is to let them have the property they value so highly. I left east Texas 40 years ago, and this particular piece of property (bought by me for my mom and dad to live on) is all that is left of east Texas in my rear view mirror. Your story strengthens my conviction that I did the right thing by leaving.
Sorry to hear about your situation. Rest assured you are not the only one who has felt the heavy hand of the State of Taxes, eh I mean Texas.
BTW, my mom (1917-2006) grew up at Huntington.

Oh, man, that's the pits!!!! Why are they so negative about manufactured homes? Mine and most of the ones in my neighborhood are a heckuva lot nicer than many of the homes in town!
If they are concerned about keeping areas attractive, then why don't they simply implement and enforce regulations instead -- such as the homes have to be fully skirted, have a minimum size requirement for the home and the lot, pitched roof required, etc.?

Moving to Huntington area
I am interested in moving to the Lufkin/Huntington area. Possibly the lake area. Any ideas, hints, suggestions?

Police dept. shorthanded??? They are preoccupied with raising money for the city thru speedtraps to catch the unwary and innocent, they just sell the "citation" to a collection company in Houston -
a dirtbag outfit called "The Carlton Company", both parasites operate at the fringes of the law for their dishonest gain. Public safety is just an incidental and distant priority of the Huntington, TX PD,
they exist foremost as a revenue generating arm for this parasite of a city. This city needs to unincorporate and be annexed by the city of Lufkin, the residents would then enjoy honest and competant police AND fire protection.
