Brazoria, Sweeny, Lake Jackson, Hutto, Granger, Taylor, Elgin, Lexington, Smithville, La Grange, West Columbia, East Columbia, Salado, Jarrell, Lindale, Winona.

These are all small towns with friendly people, but they are all in different parts of the state. I live in Hutto. It's a small town, but growing some. Not fast paced but about half an hour or more from Austin.

Todays logic would say you may be a bit young to be wanting to move out of the growth rather than into it but I admire you. When I was 6 years younger than you are now (40 years ago), I came to the barren, arid, hot/cold, windy, dusty southern High Plains of Texas from the lush, green, temperate climate of the beautiful Pineywoods of deep east Texas. I have never desired to return. Most small west Texas towns have town events with small parades of old cars, tractors, wagons and codgers. Fourth of July celebrations are normally huge. To live in a small west Texas town one needs only a hardy spirit and a love for freedom. Best of luck in your decision.

San Angelo is in west central Texas. Small town, far from major cities (real far) but large enough to have what you need in it. There's a rec camp, public pools, parades every year (with the tractors that HPR talked about (in his quote above). There's an old military fort (Fort Concho), too. Schools are great, people are friendly.

There are downsides though. It's a lot drier than east Texas, more sand, flatter, hotter. And the distance to major cities (not like I need them personally). You should google it and check it out! If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask!!!

Default Small town Texas

Are there any recommended small towns in Tarrant County/ near Southlake, Grapevine, etc? Moving to Texas in 6 weeks from Michigan. Loved our small town here and would love to keep that feel.

Southlake is wonderful.....if you have verrrrry deep pockets....hardly anything there has the paint dry yet. Like Grapevine it is growing like crazy and just blends into the metroplex now....Grapevine used to be a nice little town but has become big city IMO - not much of a small town feel to it any more. They are working on maintaining downtown, antiques, etc. so it's a nice place - just not small town any more.

The problem with the Metroplex is that today's small town is tomorrow's mega suburb. Yes, I remember when Plano and Frisco had barely 2000 residents each and Grapevine was a wide spot in the road. All have been absorbed by the Metroplex--along with dozens of other former small towns. There are still some small towns in Tarrant County, but they are always in danger of booming and growing.
