Hi!

I own a handgun without a permit or license. I just wonder, if it possible that i able to carry it in my vehicle under the driver's seat for protection ? I just do not want to be troubled by the law. Any information or advises will be greatly appreciated.

If you are a bonafide traveler crossing county lines you can carry it as long as it goes from Point A to Point B with no stops in between. Just to have it in the car at all times is illegal without a carry permit. The law reads "on or about your person", so under the seat qualifies and would be illegal. If it is in your trunk then you are ok. Hope this helps!

Sorry Smoky, but you're WRONG here!

The newly-passed "Castle Doctrine" law DOES allow a person to carry a handgun in their vehicle and have it in their home. The law went into effect on 9/1/07. Here's more info: Castle Doctrine in the US - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia You CANNOT carry a concealed handgun on your person without a CHL permit.

You do not need a License to keep it in your home, in your car or in your place of business (that you own). It's simple to get a Concealed Handgun license in Tx, you should consider that way you can take it about everywhere legal.

It's highly adviseable that with issues such as these you do not look for advice on a forum like this. There is alot of well intentioned but false information to be found, as this thread shows.

It's imperative that you look at the state DPS website for information regarding carrying your weapon outside of your home.

Not understanding the state gun laws can leave you with a hefty fine or a state prison sentence. Leave a forum like this to housing prices and arguments about humidity and you will be fine!

Per TX state law you do not need a license to carry a concealed weapon in your car or to and from your car and place of residence. In order to carry concealed in places other than your car you must have a CHL (concealed handgun license). You do not need any type of license to own a gun and/or keep it in your home. This is Texas after all, and unlike California, NY, etc. the Constitution actually means something here.

I personally would speak with a law enforcement officer for advise. I definetly wouldn't pay attention to Wikipedia.

It is easy to get a license to carry a concealed weapon and going through those steps would teach you about the law in Texas.

Do NOT rely on a law enforcment officer for advice. Most are not versed in the intracacies of hand gun laws. You need to go directly to the issuing state agency that handles such affairs, such as the DPS.

And WIkipedia is for amusing reading, nothing more.

Never rely on Wikipedia for important stuff. Google Texas House Bill 1815 for a summary of the handgun law.
