i think you have bought a place walking distance to me.
yes, you can get on post without going hwy 190 by just going into downtown copperas cove and taking Tank Destroyer all the way thru post. that is how i commute to work.
let me know if you have any questions about cove etc...whatever you need, veterinarians, best places to eat, delivery, etc....send me a direct message with email address and we can communicate together, neighbor!

Yeah, that's right. I am living in Europe, less than 2 hours away from the alps, 9 hours from the french riviera, paris, amsterdam/holland, denmark, italy, spain, poland, etc etc etc., the autobahn (no speed restrictions) to get everywhere, a short train ride from so many many many historically pertinent beauties...and I am wishing with all my heart that I were in Texas.
You can take the girl out of the country....
So, what should I be looking for first when I get off the plane, go to bed, wake up and realize I haven't had time to buy a coffeemaker (or coffee, or creamer, etc etc)?

We will be moving/flying in the last two weeks of September, our horses will be with us by late October (banning any complications). No hotel for us...straight off the ten hour flight with fifteen hours of jet lag to the car rental place, then to HOME....as if we always belonged in Texas!! I can breathe easy now, knowing I don't have to wait for a hotel/motel to approve my dogs, a great dane and a beagle, before I can rest for the day!! YAY!!!
Stretch our legs, wake up and run around in our jammies on our couple acres without thirty different families' homes staring straight at us...coffee outside on the porch watching the horses...heaven. No listening to sirens all day, and thumping radios (bless their hearts, they do such an excellent job puttin the sound systems together...i just dont want to hear music i didnt turn on)
Just heaven!!! Plant my own food again, jump in the saddle and ride down the road to warm up for the day before starting my daughter's schoolin for the day.....I have a peace coming over me just thinking about these things. I am SO much more at peace! Thank-you belle, for your prayers!

Congrats
Killeen actually has an ordiance banning the sound systems & its something like a $200 fine. There is an ordiance on Fort Hood for it, also. Doesn't mean PVT Snuffy doesn't do it, but there have been enough complaints for the city to do something about it.
Most people just call it Cove. I'd say it sounds closest to "Coppers"
Avoid 90 at all cost. Just too congested. Taking Tank Destroyer as suggested is a wise choice. It's also has scenery, imo, on that side of post. Just be ready for stopping while the tanks cross over
Oh, and did you know that cows roam many of the flatlands of FT Hood? I don't know who owns them, but you are not allowed to shot them. Many times they come up on the ranges & you have to shut the range down, call range control & get them to clear the range. I had this happen to me on a
.50cal range; the cows came up along the side. If you know anything about the .50cal, you really don't want that coming in contact with an animal!!
You'll be driving along & all of a sudden come upon a few cows trying to cross the road.
You are also going to like Festival of Lights (BelleStar- correct name of the event?) where you can drive through the lake area & look at a bunch of Cmas light displays.
And for a suggestion...Warrior Way Commissary is the best one if you are into going to the commissary though that may be a little bit of a hike coming from Cove.
Best of luck.

yes lots of open range....all over Ft Hood, and West Ft Hood.
being off of 116South in Cove, i need to tell you a shortcut but VERY VERY SCENIC that will get you almost anywhere in Killeen or Harker Heights without touching Hwy 190. just follow FM 116S all the way to the "T" (not far..just a few miles south of Hwy 190). if you take a right, it takes ya to Oakalla/Briggs area, or Lampasas. if you take a left, you are on Ivy Mountain Road........a very beautiful scenic road that goes through wide open range-cattle range, cattle guards, winds around behind the Killeen Airport. ya take a left at the end of it, onto Clear Creek Road (where Metroplex Hospital is),then a right on Stan Schleuter...go all the way down Stan Schleuter, and use access roads on either side of HWY 190 to get to any of the big stores! or take 195 off of Stan Schleuter, to go to Ft Hood St/Rancier etc....where OMART is, my favorite!
when you are Ivy Mountain Road, watch out for cattle-remember it is OPEN range.
oh another thing, since you will be living in my neighborhood, if you dont like dealing with crowds, dont go to Copperas Cove Walmart-go to Lampasas Walmart..thats where i go. NO CROWDS NO LINES and i can park almost at the entrance, any day of the week. much cleaner, nicer, stress free.
for post office, i ALWAYS go to KEMPNER post office-Cove is too busy for me. too many military wives sending care packages. dont like standing in line. Kempner is VERY DEAD. i walk in and never have to wait
for shooting pool and having a few beers in a quiet laid back low key place, VERY close, within minutes of your new house, VFW Kempner-very nice!
the Festival of Lights mentioned here is BLORA (at Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area)....held during the holidays. a must see..
Tank Destroyer is a a beautiful commute through post from Cove...not the fastest way to get onto certain areas of post e.g. where i work, but safest, quietest, stress free, and gorgeous.

Aww, sorry you're getting homesick!!
Just remember...Texas leaves the light on for ya!~ lol.
Belle...sounds like a GORGEOUS place! Thankfully this is our last Army stop...and we can settle!!! FOR REAL!!! I am so pleased!
So, go west for the post office without hassles, west for the wally world with no hassles...sheesh!!! sounds almost EXACTLY like fort gordon, GA!!! there was an affluent community about 20-30 minutes NW from post where there was no traffic, brand new store, clean area, best schools, a little pricier neighborhoods...but NO ghetto/slummy areas at all... there was no wait at the P.O., no lines at the wally world...even on paydays!!! Landscaping stayed nice, less crime, everything...just by spending the same time you would sit in traffic going to the east/south of post driving past scenic horse farm after million-dollar home after lake, after more multi-hundreds of thousands of dollar homes with acres of green and landscaping around them.... yup...sounds a lot like that lol.
I think every base has a nicer/country (or rich) living end and a slummier city side....
I can't WAIT to take that drive!!! I am only sad I have to tour castles and walk along the rhine river for three months till I CAN take that (maybe even on horseback!!) ride!

oh by the way, i have seen people THREE times this month, riding their horse, on the side of FM 116South, right next to traffic, believe it or not! (this is not exactly a "rural" road, but it is on the border of "country"...so i just thought it was kinda neat!)..i need to talk the guy that owns the Texaco (one of the only businesses on the road, to install hitching posts ha ha!)

 YAY for hitching posts!!!
Ya know...when you give people enough breathing room, and make them work for themself directly, something inside a person just grows so big they can't help but help other people in need every time they can. ( I haven't yet met a rural-living person who will not help when asked or when they see something they can help with)
Absence (from other people and their issues) makes the heart grow fonder? Or do you think it is more of an issue of being able to have that breathing room and see the fruits of your own labors rather than just a 9-5 workin for someone else barely treading water or sitting in a cubicle not knowing if you're making a real difference in the world around you?
I can't wait to start my garden...patio surrounded by flowers, herbs, and in the spring, veggies, and maybe a couple berry bushes along the fence line (if they're not already there)!! You know which berries & veggies grow best under those Texas skies?

Copperas Cove--board Your Horses On Our 16 Acres
We have 16 beautiful fenced acres with 5 stalls, pond (horses love it for swimming and dunking), and round ring--max will be 9-10 horses, self-care facility. Nothing fancy, just friendly folk. One of our boarders just bought her own land and is moving the end of June, taking 5 horses with her. We live on the property, fenced around our house. I work in downtown Copperas Cove -- about 7 miles, 10 minutes to work. From Cove, N. on FM 116 (headed toward Gatesville--there is a cut-through to back gate of Ft. Hood), then left on Lutheran Church Road 3.2 miles. We are outside city limits. Give us a shout and we'll tell you more. Welcome to Texas.

Well, welcome to Texas!
Glad you found a place where you could live and have your horses with you. I work at the Copperas Cove Leader-Press (Cove's hometown newspaper) in downtown Cove, 2 doors from the movie theatre. By the way, you'll love the Cove Theatre -- first run movies--I mean the day it opens in New York! for only $3 for adults (forgot children's price- maybe $1)! No R or X-rated, all family oriented. Has a stage and local group performs plays there several times a year.
If you hear of anyone needing place for horses, please share my e-mail. We are down to 5 horses and feel like the place is deserted. We love having them here; like part of the family. One that just left due to assignment of owners from Ft. Hood to Ft. Leonard Wood loved to play a game with my husband. He would gently remove my husband's hat and lay it on the ground. Hubby would pick it up and put it back on. Repeat. Then hubby would put hat on the horse. He would pose and that ended the game. Hubby took hat back.
When you get to town, stop by the paper and say, hi! E-mail me at yellowroselv55@aol.com and I'll send you some propaganda about Cove! Schools here are excellently rated, good athletic programs and great football. Oh, some people pronounce it more like Coprus or Copperus. A map company put out a new map about 2 months ago and in big letters named it Copperass Cove. Lots of fun about that one!
