We chose to buy in Kempner because I wanted my kids in small school system with good student teacher ratio. I love Lampasa ISD- they work with the students and have that "old family values" that I wanted for my boys. They do enforce dress code- and to respect the teachers.
From where we live it is about 15 miles to gate. But- our thinking was that after dh retires we can live close- but far enough away from post, LOL.
There are some good and bad areas to Killeen and Cove- we just wanted more for our money. I have 1/2 acre and privacy! My kids can sit under the shade trees- catch frogs .. or just run and play.
(whoever said there are no trees here must not have visited far enough east- or even west!!)
There are many rentals up this way, and I would be willing to help anyone looking my way.
Welcome to Ft Hood

Good luck with the interview!!
I have been seeing several VA jobs open in Temple and Austin. (there are several small towns near Austin if you don't want big city too,LOL)
My friend just had to go to Darnell for tests this week and has absolutely raved all week about how super her experience was.. so it sounds like you would be happy there. Feel free to send me private message if you get job here.

Check here for info on on-post housing Fort Hood Family Housing - A project of Actus Lend Lease LLC

We live in Chaffee Village and love it- it's eight minutes for my husband and I to both get to work- (I work off-post).

There are many property management companies in the area as well and several nice apartment complexes that have websites.

Good luck with your move!

Nolanville and Harker Heights are the nicest areas outside Killeen. We lived in Harker Heights. It's a little more expensive. There are a lot of "bad" areas in Killen so be careful. You should be able to make your own judgment call. We were warned quite a bit about this after we arrived. I've never heard of so many negative aspects anywhere else. We rented from Colonial in Harker Heights and wouldn't rent from them again. They weren't friendly or fair with move-outs.

100% AGREE ABOUT COLONIAL REAL ESTATE PROPERTY MANAGEMENT IN HARKER HEIGHTS TX.
I rented a 4 bedroom house in Copperas Cove, a single professional female, using only 1 of the 4 bedrooms, almost never home, because I work fulltime, and the house was immaculate. No rugrats, just two little lapdogs who are not destructive and never potty in the house, and they were VERY UNFAIR WITH MOVE OUT. I got very little of my deposit back. And I did a very thorough move in and move out inspection, had professional cleaning done by their recommended companies.
They are a BIG RIP OFF. NEVER AGAIN.
I guarantee, that house, after one year, looked like I had never even lived in it. It was just like I rented it day one. But still, they were crooked and found ways to ding ya.
For instance, there were brass hooks on the bathroom doors, to hang robes. They were there WHEN I MOVED IN. But since I didn't list them, they stated I had put them up there, and therefore it was causing damage to the structure. WTF? Should I have also mentioned there was a fireplace when I moved in, so that they wouldnt say that they found a fireplace on move out day? STUPIDITY. ARGH!!!!

We currently live on post at Fort Hood and are PCSing this June. If you do not want to live on post I would highly suggest Copperas Cove which is only about 5-7 miles away. It has everything you need and if you have children they have the best schools especially the high school. Just a heads up and good luck with your move.

as long as one doesnt mind "suburbia" and a town with no "character" and just strip malls and fast food joints.

We're PCS'ing to Hood in less than 2 weeks! We're hoping for post housing, but if not, we've decided to look in Copperas Cove. Thanks for the heads up to avoid Colonial
