What?, you mean the spin job story by some local come'on lol
Just so you know I went to Jena(took a bus from Houston) last year for the Protest and there's nothing that article can do to convince me otherwise.

Let me first of all say, I am NOT presuming to answer for TexasHorseLady, so my reason for replying is that this same dismissal and sarcasm could just as easily apply to what I posted earlier.
To start? Well, with all due respect, your automatic dismissal -- as a "spin job" -- of the counter-article concerning the Jena 6 incident speaks volumes.
Well, I spent a few years myself in the very minor league journalism profession, and have enough sense to know that rejecting another person's column/editorial has merit if only at the least, once can present credible facts to counter it. So...we are all listening. The floor is yours.
And by the way, the "LOL" you apply to your post works as intelligent dismissal works ONLY if one has a case to begin with.

I am sure you speak the truth here. That is, "nothing" in this article can "convince" you "otherwise". In this case, "otherwise" defined as something which goes against your own pre-conceived notions. But I STILL have to ask, what did you learn -- when you went to Jena -- that refutes the facts (as laid out)?
And a corallary question? What, exactly, did you "protest" when you went to Jena...? Please be specific. What did you actually protest?
Well, anyway, I promise you I am going to, personally, research more, this story you cited It is just now breaking news, so not a lot to go on for the time being. But yep, if it is indeed racially motivated in terms of how/why the sentence sentence was applied (as to be distinguished from the actual sentence itself)? Then I will condemn it to high heaven in every forum I have access to.
If on the other hand, there is a lot more to it than meets to PC media eye? Then I swear to be dammed I will make a point to expose and "forward" the same on the same forums! And continue to spread word about the truth as concerns the Jena 6...

I will acknowledge that, not living there, not being one of the locals, not knowing any of the locals, I, personally, don't know the truth of the matter. But you think that going somewhere for a specific political purpose, a protest (which you capitalize, no less), for a specific side of the argument gives you absolute knowledge of The Truth of Jena (or anyplace else, for that matter), rather than the spin that the side you prefer to believe put on it?
I found the link interesting because it was an article by someone who lives there, who no doubt has their own spin on the matter, but it presented another side to the story. The truth rarely lies all on one side or the other, no matter how comfortable it might be to believe that. And spin comes in both directions; that is almost (if not entirely) as predictable as death and taxes.

Interesting... if you read back. The original link (Chronicle article) led me to believe the student had called another student and made a threat. Not really a serious thing IMO. What this student actually did was call 911 and make the threat which led to police action and locking down the school etc. Not really a laughing matter and certainly on par with things like the vandalism of the high school here in Houston. I'm not sure about the 8 year sentence, but I would certainly make that kid and his parents pay (even if it was through community service) for the expenses of calling out all those cops and screwing up everyone's schedules.

I think that the sentence was excessive and the trial was a waste of money. The judge was probably thinking about Columbine and V-Tech but 8 years is ridiculous and validates some arguements against the judicial sytem.
As to this being like Jena- well not unless someone makes a racial issue out of a non-racial issue. Reading the link given, I don't see race anywhere in the story. The over-use of the "Race-Card" only deminishes the credibility of actual and true racial claims ( i.e. Duke Lacross). If "The Man" is called out on every issue involving race (maybe one person just doesn't like another based on the content of his character and not the color of his skin) and not just when it applies, it does more harm than good. (TexasReb- good link on Jena)

Did you also go to Durham, NC, to protest against the Duke Lacrosse team?

Unless there's something we're not being told here, this sentence is a disgrace to the whole state of Texas. You get less than 8 years for manslaughter. Hell, there's child molesters walking free on our streets right now.

I don't think a white kid would have gotten such a ridiculous sentence.
|
it could happen to a poor white kid. Now, if we're talking about a mayor or judge's daughter/son or some middle/upper class white kids, it's highly unlikely this would ever happen.

This is very "rare" in Tyler
What brought this up? it happened two years ago? I've been here 18 years from Houston - work with 30 people daily for 10 years 6 or 7 are black - very little racist talk goes on - truth be known, probably no more than other places - YES any racist talk is TOO much. Yes you will certainly hear more of this out in "truly" the country side.
