Is Tyler Tx. a racist town?
After reading this story, it just made me think.Tyler student, 17, gets 8 years in prison for phone threat | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle (broken link) this is alot like the Jena 6 fiasco.

That Conviction should look real nice on the judge and lawyers resume, chalk it up as tough love.

I would think that we need to see his rap sheet of past problems. Might be shock treatment were they will bring in back before the judge after cooling his heals in the pen awhile.

Amazing sentence! One would think that his future was salvageable had they sentenced him to intense counseling, community service, etc. Instead they throw him in prison where he can become more bitter and learn more tricks of the trade. It sounds like the judge was having a bad day and decided to take it out on him.

While I agree this sentence sounds pretty harsh (if indeed there is nothing more to it than what was described in the article), I am not sure what "racism" has to do with it. Perhaps I missed something, but I didn't see any references to the kid's race at all.
On a related tangent, the Jena 6 incident was brought up. As often is the case with the mainstream media and incidents involving the South and a racial connection, the truth gets lost in the politically correct angle. For instance, here is another side of the story:

If you research the story you'll find the kid was black and I don't think a white kid would have gotten such a ridiculous sentence. just my .02 cents.

I believe that the sentence is due to previous school shootings, Columbine, Va Tech, etc,. not because the person was black or white. I doubt if he will serve much more than a year and get parole.
Law enforcement needs to take threats seriously, they did in this case. Hopefully everyone will learn a lesson.

No problem at all. And as I qualified, perhaps I DID miss something in the article you posted as concerns the student's race. If such was not stated, however, then it was you who did not provide the said relevant information.
But even so, once the whole truth comes out, I truly think one will find it is NOT a "racial" thing...which was the whole heading of the thread itself. That is just my two-cents worth. But with that said, I DEFINTELY will be the first to agree that it all sounds harsh....IF what we read is all there is to it.
I am a bit cynical though, when it comes to stories like this...and I hope people will read the "Jena 6" link I posted earlier as a bit of proof why...
