Any advice? Moving from Cleveland, Ohio to Tyler, Texas (Houston: home, employment)

We will be making the move in the next couple of months. Just wondering if anybody has anything we should be aware of, or know about, good or bad before we move. We are a couple with one 6 month old boy in our early thirties, moving down because of an employment opportunity.

I am honestly not one to post things but I came across this post and I have to add something. Born and raised in Southern California I really like to go spend summers in other states because lets face it people in California are pretty plastic...However my mom lives in the cleveland area on a lake so I take my kids in the summer to visit. My comment abou thtis area is THE PEOPLE HERE SUCK...I am not kidding they are the rudest weirdest people I have ever met in my life. I pull over for gas and ask directions at the gas station and I say "excuse me can you give me directions to " Aand the gas station attendant says" What's the matter big time californian can't figure it out??" i THOUGHT WHAT A JERK. It happens every year I visit not to mention when we meet from all over for family reunions there in cleveland my family drives from all different states like Michigan and they say the same thing. "what the hell is wrong with the people in this town" I spend every summer there and it sucks....big time...my 2 cents....oh and by the way we had a mom at my sons school move here from ohio and she is the weirdest woman...she can't seem to get along with any of the mom's here. In ohio (cleveland) MOSTLY ALL THE TEENAGE GIRLS ARE PREGNANT AND THE TEEN BOYS ARE OLL ON DRUGS. GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN. As for me I am staying in Los Angeles with the NORMAL people!!

I grew up in Canton Ohio in the 1960s-1970s, and moved to Texas in 1990. I like it in Texas much better. I lived in Tyler for about 6 months, it is not a bad town, it has everything, but I think it is a dry county. It is smaller than Cleveland, about the size of Canton Ohio. It has a college/university, good hospitals, good stores, and good restaurants. It will be hot and muggy in the summer, but you won't have the winters or lake affect snow. There is plenty of fishing and hunting in the area. Housing, I think, should be cheaper. It is a pretty town in many areas, they love roses.

All of Texas and/or Louisiana will be a cultural shock for a northerner, it is different. It took me awhile to get use to it. Just adapt and you'll be happy is my advice. Texans for the most are friendly, good, and fine people.

I grew up in NE ohio...cleveland was (thankfully) and hour and a half away. The city has issues...it is an industrial city with a city layout that resembles a rabbit warren, with NO logic to it. Being an industrial city, and industry not being as steady as it was 40-50 years ago, cleveland has not the same job opportunities for the less-educated, and the school systems are definately below par by state standards.
Combine poor schooling, por city planning, and few job opportunities for average folks, and you get rudeness (born of poor spirits), intolerance, and a general lack of morale amongst the people there...and yes, they rub it off on others, especially folks from out of town/state.
That is why most folks who work in Cleveland commute 45 min or more daily one way....to get out of that type of abandoned mess.
Fortunately, there are about a thousand (and more) other cities and towns in Ohio that do not resemble cleveland in any way shape or form, even ones within a short driving distance, that are much more pleasant and without the same level of rude.

If you really want to meet some rude folks .... try going to massachusetts. Those folks make cleveland look like a southern-belle -born-n-raised type of grandma!!!

That's amazing. We moved from Cleveland to Dallas Tx in 1981 when my kids were little. Our first Thanksgiving it was 89 degrees and I cried all day while roasting a turkey. I wanted to have cold weather & a fire in the fireplace.
To be perfectly honest I have never been crazy about living in Texas and I've never been able to make my way back home (Mentor, Ohio) because of our jobs keeping us here.
There's not much happening in Tyler Texas...but it's better than Houston or Dallas....living there is a nightmare.
Maybe you'll be happy in Texas....I hope so....I really do. It's just not for me. The ironic part for me is that I've been STUCK here 27 years!

Try to be nice and not look down on a different culture. I lived in Cleveland 1965-1968 and it was a HUGE difference in cultures in those days...redneck is not an insult in Texas... but YANKEES use it talk down to us. But....us rednecks or whatever you call us are mostly descendants of the frontiersman of old ........and WE DO THINGS A LITTLE DIFFERENT IN TEXAS...

People are very unhappy and take on on people. The town is dirty and nothing ever get done what is promised. Heck another city built a casiono and we want won what a joke.

People very strange up here. I love texas. I lived there for 20 years. I no one thing I am going back to Irving or Austin. It is beautiful and hias everything and more. Cleveland is falling apart and everything is leaving and taxes are going through the roof up here.

Politican are lazy in cleveland and all talk no action and people in cleveland just accepted this way and think it's like that every were.


Downtown cleveland is most dirtiest and most empty places I ever seen and just have fun you have always go downtown it seems like. No good places any were else to dance or bands or entertainment.

Ever been to downtown lately is horrible all the ditry building and empty buildings.


I don't even pay atten to sports that sucks and very expensive for looser and 1st time in 50 years the basketball team fianlly does something.

One thing you can have a loosing team and still the staduim are packed or almost sold out sad. We need to tell the teams that we had enought and are not going to support loosers and cleveland will always be a football town in my opinion.

O well Cleveland will never change.
