Moving to Texas perhaps?
Hi,
Im 23 and planning to make a move from NYC with my life long best friend and roommate in about a year. We're trying to narrow down our search, but all we really know is that we want something very different. We've both lived in NY for most of our lives and would love a warmer/milder climate, somewhere a bit smaller (or a lot) friendly and above all,we're looking for a place that actually believes in freedom. NYC has just become so controlled, there too much fear of authority and too many authorities trying to instill fear. Id like something laid back, safe, sort of a hippie town, but nothing too pretentious.
anyone know of anyplace like this is Texas?
thanks

It costs a lot to live smack dab in Central Austin. Gas is nearly $4 a gallon, rent would be 1k and up (expensive for Tx, maybe not too bad for you coming from NY), food is cheaper. If you live Central you have more options for public transport so that could save gas money, but this is TX, and you need a car to get pretty much anywhere else outside the city. texdav is right about the "hippie" areas. Actually downtown is getting kind of yuppified. South Austin/South Congress area, and parts of East Austin are where you'll more than likely find that vibe. The surrounding areas are more conservative.
Put another post in the Austin forum and you'll get tons of advice. Beware, we have a member trolling and arguing over there right now, so please don't pay him much mind.

I dont think I would like to live right in the middle of a city again, Ive mainly lived in cities my whole love and I love the connivence, but Im really just looking for something new. Actually gas under 4 bucks is sounding pretty good to me! Last time I was up state (I have family more towards the capital) gas was anywhere between 4.11 and 4.34! absolutely insane! I'll look into to the Austin forum, thanks for the advice everyone and I'll be sure to look out for that trouble maker!

Give It A Try
You'll likely love the Austin area if the hippie culture is what you prefer. If you're looking for good food, then I promise you this: You won't go wrong with the restaurants in Austin. There's a lot to choose from and you will love Texas barbecue better than any other. You will love it here in Texas.

Yep, I would say Austin too...there are some outlying areas of Austin that are less "big city" and more rolling hills and piney woods. Good luck!
