Industries in Abilene
I'm in need of assistance...my husband and I are moving to Abilene this September, and I'm in need of job. I've done a number of internet searches for jobs and have come up with little to nothing. I am an environmental engineer with a refinery background. What industries/job opportunities are there for me in Abilene? Any websites I should check out?

Their are a few environmental consulting companies there, but I doubt if your refinery background would help. There is an old closed refinery north of Abilene, the closest active one is in Big Spring but it is undergoing extensive repair due to an explosion several months ago. Abilene is on the far eastern edge of the Permian Basin, the real activity is around Odessa TX. There are small independant oil operators/service companies, but not much.

I live in Abilene but I have no idea about jobs in engineering. Right now, wind energy is the hot technology in Abilene with new companies moving in to work with the wind farms in the area. Perhaps the Abilene Chamber of Commerce would be your best first step? Also, Texas Tech has a small business development office here that might be able to give you some insight.
Welcome to the Big Country!

Can you provide names of the environmental consulting firms? Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it! There is a lot of anxiety moving to a new state and not having a job lined up...

There are several small consulting companies up in the panhandle that I used to work with, but not sure if they are still in business or not. Nor exactly a refinery type of job, though. Lots of confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and grain storage and processing facilities, both of which need air quality authorizations in Texas. There is some seed processing places, too (cottonseed oil extraction), which are actually a form of refinery and use lots of hexane. Cotton gins have a set of environmental requirements, too, and there is a trade organization that helps them out.
Is your background in air, water, or waste?

There are quite a few wind energy companies in the Abilene area. There are two new manufacturing and repair facilities being built here. I am confident that a research of the Abilene Reporter News data base will yield more results. Here is a link to articles about two of the new facilities:

Thank you all for your help, you've provided some good information to get me going.
My specialty is in contigency planning, spills/waste, chemicals, SARA, TSCA, with lots of refinery and oil/gas experience. I currently live in Alaska, where lots of oil resides!
