Most of it (Last Picture Show) was filmed in and around Archer City and Wichita Falls. Far as that goes, Larry McMurtry grew up in Archer City (although in the book it was called "Thalia" and in the movie, "Anarene").

I remember reading that in the movie, they had these huge fans set up to create the constant image of a "dust storm" when the scene was on the streets of the town and outside the picture show and pool hall. It DID lend to the effect..but at the same time, dust storms are really not at all THAT common to western North Texas! LOL

I'm coming in on the tail end of this movie thread. I've never seen any of the movies mentioned, except of course, The Alamo. I have, however, always wanted to go to Archer City only because of TLPS. One of these days, one of these days...

Default TLPS - All star cast

many a star got there start in The Last Picture Show. Randy Quaid was my favorite, what a goof ball. Ben Johnson was fantastic.

Quote:
Set in the semi-fictitious town of Anarene, Texas in the early 1950s, it is about the coming of age of two young men, best friends Sonny Crawford (Timothy Bottoms) and Duane Jackson (Jeff Bridges).
Cybill Shepherd, making her screen debut, plays Duane's girlfriend Jacy Farrow, and their friend and mentor Sam the Lion, owner of the town's only movie theater, is played by Ben Johnson. The film also features Cloris Leachman, Ellen Burstyn, Eileen Brennan, Clu Gulager, Sam Bottoms, Sharon Ullrick, Randy Quaid and John Hillerman.

I always liked the movie Giant, starring Rock Hudson, Liz Taylor and James Dean. I believe it was filmed in Marfa.

I'd like to add MacIntosh and TJ, filmed in the Dickens area, and on the Four Sixes ranch. It was Roy Roger's last movie. The opening scene was the best, he is driving on a lonesome Texas highway (maybe Hwy 380), Waylon is singing, Roy's gas gauge is past empty, and his thermostat is over heating.

Dancer Texas gets in there too.

It certainly was. I went over there for the 50th anniversary of the making of the film.

It is one of my favourites, as is Paris, Texas which was partly filmed in Big Bend, Houston and other parts of Texas.

Friday Night Lights was pretty good too.
