crime rate?
What is the crime rate in San Angelo? Any gangs there? Where we live now it's unsafe to step outside after dark!

dont know about carnivals, but rodeos definitely wont be a thing of the past, there are tons of small town rodeos and jackpots, ropins' etc everywhere. dont have to travel to see them since they are just about everywhere.

I have heard there are gangs... but from what I've heard.. more of "gang wanna-be's." The north side of town is the .. uh.. umm... (searching for politically correct term) predomintantly lower-income residential area. South and southwest are the more higher-income residential areas.
But there really isn't that bad of a crime index here. If there are shootings (which are VERY rare here)... they are normally between people that knew each other. If there are other crimes (mugging, etc.) I never see them on the news.
I think because of our distance from any place else (an hour either way to Interstate 10 or 20), we don't have transient crimes. And since there's a once you're here, you're here mentality, I think most people with any sort of criminal past are easily monitored.
I think the worst crimes I've heard of over the last couple months were some kids who rode through one of the main residential streets in a housing area, and broke car mirrors with bats.
I guess there's someplace I should be able to find crime statistics online for us here in San Angelo.. if I find it, I'll post it on here.

Gangs.. scare me for the fact they are not professional criminals.. they are normally stupid kids who have no clue. I would live next to a Mafia Boss any day, he is a pro criminal.. he has no need to worry about me, or I him. He would send his cronies to do the deed and just the deed would be done.. gang bangers drive by like cowards and shoot up whole neighborhoods killing babies, old people and everything but the person they are after. Also there is some honor/resepect in being a pro criminal.. gangs have none

Hi - I just joined this forum today and I live in McCulloch County near Brady - just down the road from San Angelo. Saw this thread about San Angelo and surrounding areas and thought I'd weigh in.

Well, let's see if I can find a politically correct term for "racial makeup".
Nope, I can't so here's my question...do you know the racial makeup there? It's one certain race in Atlanta causing most of our problems. They have taken over the city......from the city government all the way down to the ghetto. We use to love our evening walks but not anymore. So sad!

Well.. that's kind of a loaded question. I'm assuming what you are asking is what the racial makeup of the criminal aspect is. Of course.. as a whole I would say hispanic. But.. that's not because they are the only race committing crimes, but because they are the majority of the racial makeup of the city as a whole. And based upon percentages, I would say as a whole, the income of the hispanic community in the city is less (as a generalization) than the rest of the non-hispanic community. There is not a large population of blacks, and the whites in the town also span the gambit from low-income to the retired wealthy.
But again, I haven't seen a lot of crimes reported in the news from the city. I think the biggest problem the city has, as a whole, is the problem with teenage pregnancy... but I don't see that as any different in the rest of today's cities all across America. One teenager having children is too much in my opinion.

Really, because every web site I have looked at says its mostly White people, with a population of 60% to Hispanics being 33%, Blacks 5%, and Other 15%.
But here your saying the majority is Hispanic? Can you please explain how you come to making the statement above?

Can't officially. I'm not looking at a website.. I'm looking at people I pass in the street, the stores, the gyms, the parks. But if you really need me to... I'll get the statistics. I could be wrong... but I recall reading somewhere where whites were no longer the majority in San Angelo.
Don't know what point you're trying to make or why... but it's all good.
