Got a friend who's thinking about moving for a job there. Anyone been there or from there. What are the quality of the schools like? How affordable is housing and land-cause her crazy boyfriend wants to get some horses and become a real cowboy.

Question? Why ask about Pecos in the El Paso forum?

Pecos is a pleasant little town I occasionally pass through in the course of my job. Economy largely based on oil/gas to the north, agriculture and ranching. Land is plentiful and cheap; your friend should have no problem finding land for horse(s). I can't attest to the schools, I don't know too much about them. But as in any small West Texas or S.E. New Mexico town, public schools are typically well-funded and are formed around tight-knit communities. If your friend likes solitude and spring-time dust storms, Pecos is for him/her.

If someone wanted to move to West Texas and be a 'cowboy', I would recommend Alpine instead of Pecos. Alpine definately has a Western feel, and it may have the best weather of any town in Texas. It also has a college, so there must be some educated people there. I haven't been there in twenty years, but I imagine it is still a great place. Maybe another poster could compare it to Pecos. I wasn't too impressed with Pecos the time I was there.

I like Pecos all right, but it's losing population like crazy, which would give me concern if I were planning to move there. Alpine beats it hands down.

Pecos huge rabbits. also saw a undernurished bear about 6AM one morning on the highway south of Pecos towards Fort Davis. They say the come down from the Guadalupes or swim the Rio and travel up the Franklin Mnts. There is a population explosion of black bear in Mexico and the human population is crowding them out as well as ones coming down from the Guadalupe Mnts. because of drought.

Cowboy; I would recommend Van Horn or Sterling City or Lamesa or Seminole for farming. Blanco and Pandale have big ranches and many working cowboys.

Alpine is fine too as is Marfa but avoid Presidio (bad juju).

Marfa seems to be getting covered up in Hollywood types. A lot of them own land there for the solitude.

Pecos is alright, as far as it goes. It started as an end of track settlement when the railroad came through and has never progressed much beyond that as there's really no basis for their economy except some ranching and farming. From a travelers perspective, it seems that their real chief source of revenue is speeding tickets.
