I agree. Santeria is not a cult, it's a religion. It's only scary if you don't understand it. What happened in Matamoros was some serial-killing psychos using a traditional religion with ties to Africa and Cuba as a cover for their criminal activity. They weren't practicing Santeria; they were practicing drug-induced insanity.

Hello, I'm new here and just read through this thread.

I think those that posted the negative stuff about Brownsville are a little over the top.

I think perhaps they just don't like the people, period.
well that's OK, us Mexicans are changing Texas' landscape and most of Texas will look like the Valley one day. So those who hate it will have to keep on moving north.

I'm just being funny. But, anyway, here are some photos of Brownsville's DT.

It shows the historical buildings as well as the shoppers who mostly cross the bridge to shop in B'ville's downtown. You'll notice that most of the stores in the DT are geered toward this clientelle.

The newer shopping centers and malls are located in the North of the city. The city alond with the rest of the Valley is experiencing a building boom right now with lot of new retail and residential projects.

Your photos are wonderful, RGV! I have never had the opportunity to visit Brownsville; after viewing your excellent pictures, I now feel as if I have a good idea of the way its downtown looks.

Thanks so much for sharing!!

Default Working in Brownsville for 3 months....:(

I moved down here from the north as a new graduate and I can say at this point I would not recommend it if you are not hispanic and don't speak fluent spanish. I am the kind of person who has always gotten along with MOST people so when I say this I mean it. I have traveled all over as a military brat and I can say for the first time in my life I feel like a "stranger in a strange land" ....some people here are great but there is an unusally large number who don't like you simply because you are white. I would think twice and maybe I will feel different when I find the right place.

Anyone seen the old movie BACKROADS with Tommy Lee Jones and Sally Field? It took place downtown Brownsville. The streets were dirt.

RGV, I noticed the graffiti on the wall of the Pacheco building.

"EL 421"

Is that in reference to "La 421"? They're still around? I thought they had suffered the same demise as "La Muralla" or "La Parra". Getting Old.

A friend has a recording studio. It's called "421 Recording Studio".
