Good Home Cooking in Ballinger or San Angelo
The wife and I are going to Big Bend next week, but stopping at Sonora to see the caves first. We will be staying either in Ballinger or San Angelo this Saturday night. I will be looking for a good home style breakfast on Sunday morning and I prefer to stay away from the chain-restaurants, if possible.
Any suggestions?

Can't help you with breakfast. Lived there 15 years & they have some of the best steak, chicken fry & Mexican Food in TX in Angelo. If you get in early enough for dinner Saturday give those a shot.
Any local ought to be able to point you in the right direction.
BTW, West Tx has some of the best people you'll ever find. Enjoy Big Bend & the Davis Mountains, it's one of my favorite places and has the biggest sky you'll ever see.

It has been 13-15 years since my last trip to the Big Bend Country. I love Alpine, and Ft Davis. I would love to retire there, but like my wife has told me, "I'll come and visit you." I am a geologist by degree and had a passion for astronomy for many years, and I love the west. It is a perfect place for me.
If I don't get a reply or suggestion, I'll find a place. Part of the fun in life is the exploration.

I'm not sure I could retire out yonder, but a nice cabin would be nice to spend the summers. I believe there are more stars out there then here in DFW. They must congregate over the mountains.

I never went out for breakfast much when I lived in San Angelo, but I can tell you that Diego's Burritos is really good! You just follow the crowd just off Bryant and Avenue L. It's a little place but they make really good breakfast burritos!

I live in San Angelo, some of the places that serve "home cooked" meals is Mr. T's (Avenue J west of 87 (Bryant/Konegheim)). Another place is Roxie's Diner. That's at Bryant (87/Konegheim) and Jackson.
Problem is.. I don't believe either is open on Sunday! Only chain-type restaurants are open then (Denny's, IHOP, Golden Corral). I don't even know if the Corner Stop, which makes great breakfast burritos (I personnally love the brisket burrito) will be open on Sundays either.
I don't know if you will have much more luck with Ballinger.
Sorry!

IIRC, there are only a couple of small mom-and-pop motels in Ballinger, and they are both pretty old. Small, West Texas towns are well-known for not havign anything open on Sunday, so I'd recommend staying in San Angelo. In Ballinger, the onl yeatery I'm aware of that is open on Sunday AM is the Town & Country's snack bar...
