McAllen/Edinburgh/Misson Tx
My Future husbands parents are moving to McAllen from Pittsburgh and we are wondering if we should move to this area as well and leave the Pittsburgh/NYC area.
Being from NYC I am looking for a very Luxury location to move to. I appreciate any suggestions.

Well of course you are. Lol honestly it's probably not a great idea to move to Mcallen from New York unless you are prepared for some severe culture shock.

Retirees love the place, however, a luxury location it is not. You will find nice houses, but for the most part it is poor. There is a huge population of retirees that flock to the Rio Grande Valley in the winter months and some decide to stay year round, but most return back to their northern houses in the summer.

Do you still have to work for a living? If so, and you're not in the medical profession and/or bilingual, you will NOT want to move to this area. The unemployment here is some of the highest in the nation, and always the highest in Texas. About the only people who are able to do well here are doctors and other medical folks.
It is NOT a luxury location by ANY means!! There are very few upscale department stores and other such places simply because the local economy won;t support them.

uh not South Texas...ya want luxury? aint lived in North Texas since 2003, but from what this Fort Worth area native recalls-Highland Parks (Dallas), Trophy Club, Southlake/Colleyville, and i am sure places like Flower Mound and Argyle sure gettin up there. and Plano, Frisco...
i am SURE there are "luxury" areas in the San Antonio, Houton, and Austin areas. i think Canyon Lake perhaps? Horseshoe Bay/LBJ Lake i am sure too.
just about any major metro area in Texas-but nowhere south of San Antonio would you find something you are looking for or expecting. and it's not even about that. the culture shock for yall-OMG. if i could barely handle it, and I am a Texan, uh....i would expect yall would have a very difficult time acclimating

Let me just say that some people are culture-shocked whenever a non-white person w/o boots, spurs, 10 gallon hats & a rifle on a sling passes through the room. Also please allow me to clear things up before more ignorance spreads:
Lowest-income counties in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mcallen is in Hidalgo county. It's not nearly the poorest part of the country, and it didn't even make the 2nd list in that article. You're talking about Starr county which is a dirt-poor rural area.
But you want really poor? Come out to Port Arthur. If this area I'm talking about was separated from the refineries & the rest of Jefferson county it could easily be the worst in Texas if not the entire USA. I'm now inspired to go out there after work one day to take pictures and risk my well being just to show all of you how sad and downright terrible parts of this state can be. The McAllen/Pharr area is a cakewalk in comparison. And people here would know this if they didn't have their heads shoved so far up Texas' and their own asses.
