Don't Mess with Texas

The bumper stickers are specifically ABOUT the anti-littering campaign, produced by it, so it's a little bit of a stretch (to put it kindly) to assume that the people that use them aren't referring to the campaign - that's the entire point of the stickers.

The point of the discussion was to provide an example of Texan's need to boast about themselves. This sticker may have been created as an anti-littering campain but it has evolved since then and people now use it as a tough talking symbol of pride. So it doesn't matter what the original thought behind the slogan is if people are using it for something else. And if it's such a stretch to suggest what I did then why are there Texas websites who sell these stickers selling it for the very reasons I state. Your own people are selling it and citing my reasons. And there were a lot of these websites. I randomly picked the first two I saw so don't try to argue those websites are in the minority.

"Let them know you mean business with this quality vinyl bumper sticker."
Does this sound like they are selling it as anti-littering slogan. Cmon people, I think it's pretty obvious why many people have this sticker on their car and it's not about litter.
Here is another website
"Don't Mess With Texas"...THE bumper sticker...
This slogan started 20 years ago as a campaign to keep our highways clean...and it's now become our "anthem."
So whether you live in our great State, are a mis-placed Texan, or you just like Texas, Texans and/or Texas stuff, you'll want this bumper sticker.
"Don't Mess with Texas" has taken on a variety of definitions over the years...so feel free to add your own...(I've found that it's been fun to have in my office when I've lived out of state...)

Not sure why you bring in California into this? I thought this was the Texas forum discussing Texas? I am glad you agree that Texans like to brag about their state so we can close out that thread.

LOL...They even have a website devoted to this phrase which is further proof that Texans use it as a symbol of pride to express themselves.

I worked in MS for 6 months on a temporary assignment. I had a hard time understanding the natives when I was there. A Texas accent sounds NOTHING like MS to my ear. MS is very, very southern, to the core.
Texas has some southern elements, but it's not what I'd consider a southern (culturally-speaking) state.

I will say this - I've never heard someone in LA have a 15 minute conversation with someone else from LA about how great LA is. Of course, Texans often think, "that's because LA sucks." No, it's because LA doesn't need an introduction. LA isn't insecure about itself. LA doesn't bother itself with endless verbal diarrhea about what a great place it is.
People from LA and California don't dislike Texas and they don't dislike Texans. But they secretly laugh at the endless diatribe that goes along between Texans about how awesome their home "republic" is....then they go back to Los Angeles and resume their indifference about the lone star state.

And one of my favorite movies is 'To Live and Die in LA', primarily 'cause it reminds me how much better off I am not being there. And I have been there, mucho times.

Apologies up front for any offense to the poster of this BS but if you think the slogan of 'Don't mess with Texas' in its origination and appreciation had anything to do bragging then it's a glaring admission of unqualified ignorance. That others may have taken it to some other context was/is not the intent of the anti-littering campaign. That it's a catchy phrase is indicative of its genius. To wit, this current dialogue.
Perhaps this discussion should be moved to the Anti-Texas Panty Waist Participants forum.

The phrase "gets their panties in a wad" is SUPPOSED to be "nasty", as in referring to a nasty attitude.
Clearly, azriverfan., you have some issues regarding Texas. However, your issues regarding Texas appear to have a great deal more to do with your personal experiences and how you choose to view things than they do with the majority of the citizens of Texas.

Some of us are aware of the Texas bumper sticker campaign against littering but you are ever so right, many Texans use it as just plain, "Don't mess with us because ........" Anyone can fill in the blanks however he or she chooses.

Is this all you do all day??? Sit around and talk down on the Texas culture???
