Going to Wimberley this weekend to go tubing down the Blanco :)
I am soooooo excited I've never been to Wimberley before. I will be able to get a good look at some of the Hill Country. I've only been to TX once and that was about 5 years ago. I can't wait for this weekend!
My husband still doesn't know where he is going to be assigned. We are still looking hard at Alpine and Georgetown. There are also openings in Jacksboro and Henrietta. So we shall see...
Can anyone suggest a cool place to eat in Wimberley? What other fun stuff does Wimberley have to offer?

have you called to check on the water flow--we were in New Braunfels area last week and while the Guadalupe and San Marcos seemed to be ok for tubing
the places we called in Wimberley area when we were trying to find a place to rent were talking about the low water and the fact that some parts of the river might be going dry because of drought in that area
not saying you can't tube--just asking if you have checked the flow
cool places to eat in Wimberly would be Cypress Creek Cafe
Cypress Creek Cafe - Restaurant*&*Club
wonderful location on the creek and the time we ate there the food was very good
they have live music from time to time as well
there is also the Wimberly Pie Company--we bought a pie there last week and loved it
bldg looks kind of unkept but that is way lot of them look--
pie was good...
lots of little stores around the downtown area to look through
google for the links

We live just down the road from Wimberley...the square has great shopping. Wimberley Cafe has great breakfast-I recommend the huevos rancheros.
Drive out Ranch Road 12 towards Canyon Lake, you will be on a stretch of road called Devil's Backbone, and you will see why it is called that.
Georgetown is nice but very very crowded. The whole North Austin/RR/Gtown area is packed! More and more folks are headed into the south Austin area, and outlying areas like Buda, Kyle, and even San Marcos.
We haven't had a lot of rain, and 2 weeks ago the river was very slow to tube. The 3 hour ride took about 6.5 hours. The Blanco in Wimberley is beautiful, and I suggest visiting Cypress Creek while you are there. If you're so inclined, the Canyon Lake area is really nice, and even the 20 mi. trip to Gruene is worth it too.

Thank you so much, loves2read, for all the information I will call about the water levels in Wimberley. We are renting a house on the river. So if the water is low, at least we can enjoy the view and frolic in the water some I will definitely check out Cypress Creek Cafe and the Wimberley Pie Company. Thanks again!
Becca
P.S. Is there a Wal-Mart in Wimberley? We need to get some groceries.

Hi,
No, no Walmart in Wimberley, but they have a grocery story near downtown called Brookshire Brothers (spelling may be wrong). A little higher prices than usual, but saves you gas from driving into a bigger city I guess.
Another restaurant that is decent is Cypress Creek Cafe and also this new Italian place ...I forget the name, but it's in the same square.

The growth has just ruined the area, but that's progress and population growth for you. 30 years ago the whole area was a terrific place that is just now overrun with people. It's still terrific, but....
I hardly recognized the place when I drove down to see Sis (who lives in Mountain City) last spring. It's just wall to wall people, retail, et al....!

Too bad you're crossing Georgetown off your list. It's a very nice little town. If anyone thinks South Austin and South of Austin isn't going to be just as built out as North Austin they're kidding themselves. And I'm saying all this as someone who lives in Hutto, next door to Georgetown, North of Austin.

I agree, Georgetown is a very nice little town. From what I researched, it has great schools, no crime and affordable housing. But the population is growing rapidly (like most areas around Austin). I prefer more wide open spaces and less crowds. I hear Hutto is a great town also
