Hi all, :
I am a student nurse from cambridge, England and am hoping to spend three weeks in texas if i can get a placement out there, at the moment waiting for some reply's. During my visit out their i was hoping to do a bit of sight seeing, when not working. My "mum's" decidied she wants to come with me and as it's her 50th couldn't really refuse, any how, she would like to visit some working cattle ranches and indian reservations places can any one give me any ideas. Have looked on internet, however, just keeps coming up with "dude and guest ranches". I love horse riding any suggestions for that would be great too. [+] Rate this post positively |

There is not much in the way of Indian reservations in Texas, just a couple of tiny ones in west Texas and one a little bigger in east Texas with a tribe most people never heard of.Oklahoma is the place to see Indians. As far as cattle ranches go,most are found south of the interstate from Laredo to San Antonio to Houston, because of the better grasslands.I'm not sure how many cater to tourists. The best known is the King Ranch around Kingsville in south Texas.

Check out YO ranch online for a working cattle ranch in the Texas Hill country.

The YO is more of a tourist/hunting ranch now than a true working cattle ranch, but it would give a glimpse of what it was like, and does offer horseback riding and trail rides, along with an organized Longhorn cattle drive on occasion. They even have their own restaraunt in Dallas,I think, and a fancy hotel in the Hill Country.

Thanks all, i'll have to investigate !!. Just been reading some of the forums on the site about relocating in texas, trying to get an idea where might be nice to visit, still not sure!! Texas is such a big place, i hoping to spend some time working in a riding centre that uses horse riding as a therapy for disable people, so far i've found one in dallas. Any ideas for locations would be greatly appreciated.
Just out of curiosity what time is it over their? not sure if your six or seven hours behind us. Thanks again all |

In all of Texas except for a very small area in the El Paso region, we are 6 hours behind you, U.S. central time. El Paso is U.S. mountain time or 7 hours behind you. |

kat1804, I would suggest that you try to visit in spring or autumn if possible. You'll cook in summer unless you like heat. Fall is my favorite (or favourite) season.
