Fiddler77 I lived and worked in Sweetwater for 11 years along with my husband and 3 children. We moved from the Austin area to this west Texas town. We made many dear, dear friends there through our church but not the "rest of the town". It is clannish in many ways and our children suffered for it. My children were at the tops of their classes and in sports, yet we watched as the children of the "founding fathers" of Sweetwater be chosen for any and all recognitions/awards,etc. It is very difficult for an outsider to be accepted.

On a positive note, if you are truly interested in snake hunting, this is the place for you!!! Rattlesnake safety is absolute must especially with children. We had many encounters with the pesky creatures. Also, the West Texas friendliness is truly present here (just realize that friendliness does not always equal friendship).

What about some of the smaller towns just outside of Sweetwater. We used to have a deer lease just outside of Rotan and loved it there.

All of the comments about Sweetwater seem positive, but when I was looking at the C-D stats it didn't seem like a good place at all. crime was above the national average and it seemed like a poor area. I don't get it.

I'm scouting out towns in Texas for next year. I'm looking to get a job in Texas, preferably west texas..should I consider sweetwater?

It could be that in recent years law enforcement in Sweetwater has stepped up a notch. More enforcement means more crime stats for a while. Police, sheriff, and District Attorney seem intent on giving the boot to druggies and scofflaws.

I'm satisfied with much less than most of the consumers out there. Just give me a sunset and a breeze and a place to walk, that's the best, I suppose I could find that somewhere in Tx! LOL!

So Fiddler, I hope you're still on your way to the Sweetwater area, I know I'm hanging in there and can't wait to find my way back....
I love your outlook on life! Such an unique way of putting it perspective. I could not agree with you more.

I remember after Katrina some interviews with some of the survivors who had come to a quick realization of the more important things in life and how much of the 'stuff' was just that .... 'stuff' and how much of it that you really didn't need. A decent life, good health, good friends, a warm summer breeze on your face in the evenings, ahhhhh, who needs to keep up with the Jones's?

Yup you got that right Lonestar2007. Getting older and wanting to make life matter for something.
It's how you treat the people around you too. I think too many values are slipping away. People aren't as respectful as they once were. OMG I sound like I'm really old! It's time to get back down to Tx and enjoy life again! Vacationing in Feb '09 will be great... breakup the winter for me!

I agree with you completely, Eliza. I am 36 years old, and feel the same way. I think people have a tendency not to see the real beauty around them, and tend to get wrapped up in their "things" or there personal issues. Perhaps with the economy the way it is, we can start to see people appreciate more of whats around them, and enjoy life from this new-er (or perhaps less seen) perspective.

Having a lot of 'things' that have accumulated over the years and decades has another consequence. It's almost impossible to move anywhere! The stuff has a way of imprisoning you. I can remember, a loong time ago, when I could put everything I owned into a big car and take off for greener pastures. Those days are long gone!

Yup all the 'stuff' is going to be hard to move. But it's do-able...I will someday.
So Fiddler - are you still thinking of Sweetwater? I'm starting my Feb trip in Abi and then through Sweetwater, to MO and then down in to Big Bend. Can't wait!

Hi! I've lived in sweetwater 40 plus years. I like the small town feeling.
