Default Denton tx

Whos been? What to expect? I heard it is like austin 20-30yrs back before austin lost its identity to corporate and tourist hijackers.
I'll be visiting soon to check out the art school.

I'd be skeptical any place in north Texas would have the same progressive vibe Austin at least used to. I haven't been to either place in over 15 years, so I don't know what they're like right now.

Denton is a very stange city, especially the college scene. That includes very weird professors. It would be a great city if it weren't for the strange and passive aggressive culture. Most people appear autistic and very self absorbed there and don't really have good "people" or professional skills. Ethics is pretty low.
The traffic is horrible. Some streets there are also terrible to drive on. There is a crime problem there.

On the good side it has a large art and film scene (hence the low morale), the art and hippie crowd is even larger than in Austin,Texas. The music scene is prevalent and thriving. The GLBT crowd is large. There is a water park and some good places to eat and shop at. Churches range from liberal and progressive to fundamentalist and cultish.

Good luck.

No, you are wrong. Austin is way overrated besides their beautiful hill country scenery, and it is far from a liberal city. I'd call Austin very relaxed and conservative. Denton is clearly more progressive than Austin. Scenery in Denton is horrid of course. It is a very weird art town for sure. Very much in a time warp too. I'd stay away unless you like that type of culture and atmosphere.

If you really want more on Denton, being close to Dallas, you'd be best off posting all of this in the Dallas threads. You'll get more responses there.

Denton is virtually equidistant from Dallas and Fort Worth. I'd put it in both forums.

I lived in Denton for a long time. It's too big and has too much traffic now, but I still like it. UNT is a cool place...I have 3 degrees from there. The city itself is conservative, but the campus is a nice mix. Austin is a whole 'nother smoke.

You have 3 degrees from that hellish college? wow how did you suffer through all the rude and passive aggressive people there? Tell me your secrets.

Imo Denton wasn't conservative but it is moderate. It has a mix of weirdo art - liberal people and hardcore christian people that are equally as strange.

Its not anywhere as bad as artsguy portrays it yet its better than he positives it.
How? Im here now. But he has all right to give his opinion. He and I have gone at it before about Denton so this is kind of funny for me. Respect to you artsguy.

Anyways.... i believe its true... Denton is like Austin 20 or 30 years ago (and this is simply a guage because Denton has its own thing going on).

Denton is more intimate weird than Austin. I don't know exactly how to explain it but thats that. There is no other town in texas that has the identity and uniqueness that Denton has. Some people here know it and try and make it secret to keep it for themselves.... others don't get it and usually those folks are very materialistic...(the dallas group?). Whatever the case there is no town in texas that has Dentons identity.... NO TOWN.

check the blog entitled "whats a denton?" on here....

MySpace.com - www.myspace.com/397360899

and check the rest of the site out.... all the friends on the space are either denton biz or denton bands. videos are Denton.

good luck.

Denton since the rise of the football program is becoming a frat college sad to say
but they are red-neck frats for the most part and not trust fund baby frats like UT

my son has two degrees from UNT and so does his wife--there are creative people at Denton but think lot of that is just not the same quality as UT Austin smart--the towns people and many of the people connected to UNT are just small town Baptist type conservative--very Republican even many of the college students

traffic in Denton is bad--they are trying to upgrade the roads because of the growth in the area but it is taking forever--the city has cleared what some students considered almost sacrosant area of the downtown to make way for new devleopment

I find Denton just tacky and dirty---it does not have the Austin quirkyness to play off --
does not have the physical beauty of Austin with Town Lake and nearness to hill country or the historial ties---
