Default What happened to Pecos?

I travel quite a bit, and I have stopped at various towns along the interstate highways. One in particular in which I have stopped at in years past was Pecos, Texas. The last time I was there was in 2002. However, I recently took a road trip and came through the area. I stopped in the town, and it was almost sad. Many of the establishments were closed or boarded up. What happened to this city? It wasn't exactly economically-sound six years ago, but it was nowhere as bad as it appeared to be this year.

Area residents, can you tell me what happened to this small west Texas city?

I think it was probably I-10 that killed Pecos. I also think way back in the old days there was probably more grazing land in those parts. Lots of areas in west Texas have been overgrazed. That turns a grassland into unproductive scrub.

That's a shame. I've been through Pecos a few times and rather liked it.

It's hard to say with Pecos. But they have not really had much new economic development in recent years. Maybe the new things happening in Midland and Fort Stockton will eventually rub off on Pecos. West Texas just needs that little extra something to keep the little towns going.

Pecos has poor and city management.
City officials are afraid to lose thier jobs if they go against the grain even though they see things are not right.
The work ethics are very bad no one wants to work and rather live off the welfare system.
Tax incentives for companies to build and employ have been pushed to the wayside.
Ask yourself why is there being 6 hotels being built. There won't be anyone to work at them, haveing more that is needed just thins out the business for all of them.
Millions of dollars spent on uneccasary construction. 4million for a library half the students can't spell.
A water park? a waste just like the skate park.
This town has been set up for economic suicide.
The city council does not effectively inform residents about issues that concern them thus all decisions are made by a handfull of city officials.
This city needs someone that is for the betterment of the people and the town not for personal and financial gain to run it.

Smile Waterpark?

I've never been there but I was wondering, is there a waterpark there?

I've been there three times and am working on a fourth time and those times I've seen no waterpark there.

1) I was there Nov. 12, 2004 going from Marfa, Alpine & Fort Davis back to the dorm at Texas Tech in Lubbock

2) I was there Jan. 28, 2006 for my 1st visit to The West of the Pecos Museum but had no film for photos b/c I emptied my only camera at The Roy Orbison Museum in Wink

3) I was there Nov. 29, 2008 for my return to The West of the Pecos Museum with my digital camera en route to Burger Builders Drive-In in Hobbs, NM & a friend's apartment in Lubbock.

4) I'm going back there for Alfredo's Mexican Restaurant en route to Fort Stockton (never been there-skirted the edge of it on the way back to Lubbock from only Big Bend visit-I feel like going to Big Bend again), Alpine, Marfa & Fort Davis hopefully some weekend Sept. 2009.
