The road systems in Dallas and Houston are both quite good intuitively as well as in good shape. LA's is intuitive as well, but is in disrepair and the lack of feeders is a little weird to me. LA does a much better job of hiding their freeways than we do.

The traffic in Dallas is generally worse than Houston unless we're talking about 290 or I-10, but is in no way worse than Los Angeles.

But Dallas has an extensive rail system, DART and TRE. It will double in size in the next 2 years.

Right now, IMO, the TRE has the best chance to really make an impact on commuting across the Metroplex longterm. The DART rail line is fine in many ways but my views of it are such that it seems difficult still for regular folk to gain broader access to it right now, making bus still a slightly better option for them in an everyday sense. The TRE seems to a have a better opportunity of helping regional commuters from peripheral areas into the core, kind of like how the park & ride system works but on a grander scale (presumably).

Ultimately, if both METRO and Harris County (and Fort Bend County) can reach some regional accord, Houston-Galveston has a good infrastructure of rail lines that would facilitate a wide-range commuter rail network, but the devil is in the details (and the politics) of it.

Skip Houston it's too far out of the way and will be too humid

You can visit Dallas, Austin and San Antonio easily - they are all on the I-35 corridor.

Dallas is the only one of the four in north Texas... if anything, it's the one out of the way.

The other three are south/central.

Although Dallas is a nice city, It's the furthest distance from the other 3. And I'm saying this as I live very close to Austin. It only takes 2 hours from here to get to either Houston or San Antonio and closer to 4 to Dallas.

Houston isn't the only city in this state pumping out kids who can't spell. Ever read the letters to Santa section of the paper during the Christmas Holidays? I'm stunned by how bad a lot of the middle school age children spell.
