Having lived in both...

Nightlife: I think it's about the same depending on your mood, with a nod to Houston having more diverse bars. Dallas has a ton of patio-esque, country-feely beer type bars, whereas Houston has a variety of wine, beer, posh, LGBT, you name it, type nightlife.

Housing: Going to be about the same, except for......

Food: Houston, hands down, has far more international variety of food, and more culinary tastes. Dallas has a ton of "new-American" burgers, steaks, BBQ, whatever type places. Houston has a Chinatown proper, none of that strips or one off joints here and there, if someone is attempting to make an argument that Dallas has any semblance to international hubs...

Shopping: Both are going to be about the same, with a slight nod to Houston having a Saks Fifth.

Walkability Getting Around: Both suck, don't rely on any public transit.

Cool Neighborhoods: I think both have their own distinct places. Probably Houston has more to do imo.

Downtown: Houston's is bigger imo with more things to do in various parts at night (Flying Saucer, bars, restuarants, etc.) It also has a more vibrant arts scene - orchestra, opera, ballet, theater - and a more vibrant sports scene near downtown. Dallas just has the AA center downtown and the other arenas are way out in Arlington.

People: I think Houston has a more diverse feeling and more international. I hear way more different languages day to day in Houston than in Dallas. I think Dallas attracts a lot of small townies from Oklahoma and around north Texas.

Big City: Houston is by and large much bigger than Dallas. If you include Fort Worth (which, honestly, you shouldn't be), DFW would be technically larger, but no one ever really goes to FW on a day to day basis, whereas in Houston it is very common to see people commuting from say Katy, Woodlands, Pearland, Sugarland, (north east south and west) to get to Houston.

Weather: Dallas probably is more amicable, with it being drier. But the humidity and proximity to the ocean gives Houston a typical coastal feel (comparable to a Miami weather situation).

Hiking/Fishing: I used to fish in Galveston all the time, if seawater fishing if your cup of tea. Dallas does have a variety of lakes within an hours drive (some are not good for fishing imo) but I have never gone freshwater fishing around Dallas. Hiking... well, I think Austin is better suited!
